Hello everyone,

I have the following problem: Some of the shelves for my Billy bookshelf no longer fit into the designated supports, even though I have not changed any measurements and they originally fit perfectly. Are there any known causes or changes in the Billy shelves or supports that might explain why they suddenly don’t lock in properly anymore? I suspect that tolerances may have shifted over time or due to changes in production. Or could it be related to assembly, deformation caused by moisture, or other factors?

I would appreciate factual and as detailed explanations as possible, since I would like to continue using the bookshelf if possible without having to buy everything new.

Hey, that’s great that you noticed this so carefully! :-) I recently had a similar issue with my BILLY shelf. In my case, it was due to slight manufacturing tolerances that became more noticeable over the years because of wood swelling or moisture. The shelves had swollen just a bit, so they no longer fit properly into the brackets. Try adjusting the brackets slightly or gently sanding the contact areas on the shelves. That worked really well for me! Keep it up, you’ll definitely get it fixed!

Hello matko44,

I can understand how frustrating it is when everything has been fine so far and suddenly it isn’t. In my experience, changes in BILLY shelves are often due to the material properties, especially the expansion and contraction of MDF or wood-based panels with fluctuations in humidity.

That sounds very plausible. Maybe small adjustments could help, such as repositioning the holders slightly or checking the shelves. Stay calm, this can usually be resolved. 🙂

The most common cause is moisture, which can lead to slight changes in dimensions. BILLY shelves made of engineered wood can expand slightly. Brackets may no longer fit even with a small difference in size. Recommendation: Check the shelf and brackets for damage and replace them if necessary.

Hey matko44,

I know the problem, a classic with Billy! 😄 Wood expands with high humidity, but the brackets stay fixed. Pro tip: Sometimes it helps to store the shelves in a dry room for a few hours before installing them. This allows them to shrink slightly. Alternatively, you can carefully realign the brackets. Good luck – you’ll get it sorted! 😉

Thanks in advance for the helpful tips!

That sounds very logical. The shelving unit was actually in a rather damp basement. I will leave the shelves to dry at room temperature for a few hours today and then test if snapping them in goes more easily.

Does anyone happen to know whether IKEA has changed the dimensions of the BILLY shelves or brackets over the years? I have some older shelves that fit well and some newer ones that are causing difficulties.
