ᐅ What can help with squeaky Billy drawers?

I have a problem with my Ikea Billy shelves where the drawers squeak when pulled out and pushed back in. The sliding rails are not completely worn out, but the squeaking is quite annoying. I have considered using lubricants on the rails, but I’m unsure which product would be best without damaging the wood surfaces or the mechanism. I’m also curious if there could be other causes for the squeaking, especially with furniture made from particleboard. Has anyone had experience with this specific model and can offer advice on how to fix the issue permanently?

For Billy drawers, simple silicone spray on the runners usually helps.

This is often recommended, but I see it in a more nuanced way. There are also reports that silicone spray on plastic glides can damage the surface or make the drawer harder to open if too much is applied.

If the squeaking persists afterwards, it may help to carefully treat the plastic glides with very fine sandpaper

However, this only helps if the squeaking comes from mechanical friction. If it is due to the material or poor workmanship, replacing the glides might be a better solution. How reliable are experiences that replacing them is more effective than lubrication?

I would like to add that the cause of the squeaking can also be related to humidity and temperature. Particle boards expand or contract, which can affect the drawer’s movement.

For troubleshooting, I recommend: 1) removing the drawers completely and thoroughly cleaning the runners, 2) checking the plastic gliders and replacing them if they are worn or brittle, 3) lightly lubricating all moving parts with a suitable silicone spray or oil – make sure it is of good quality so it doesn’t become sticky or gummy, 4) checking that all nuts and screw connections are securely tightened.

Do you have the possibility to order the plastic gliders separately? That would be worth testing to prevent mechanical noises. You should also check whether the runners are bent, as this can also cause squeaking.

Thanks for the suggestion. On closer inspection, the sliders still look intact, but I think I’ll start by treating the rails with silicone spray and then continue to monitor their condition. Maybe I’ll also try some fine sandpaper on the sliding surfaces.

For the procedure, I recommend: 1) fully remove the drawers and thoroughly clean the rails

That’s probably the best starting point. My apartment isn’t particularly humid, but there could certainly be fluctuations. I will keep that in mind.

If anyone has tips on specific silicone sprays or handling, please share. I definitely want to avoid damaging the mechanism by using the wrong products.
