Hello everyone,
I am wondering whether I should use felt pads or glides for my KALLAX shelf to better protect the furniture while moving it across the floor and to avoid scratches.
It is important to me that the solution is durable, effectively protects the floor, and works well on both hardwood and laminate flooring. I am also interested in how the two options compare in terms of noise reduction and stability, especially when the shelf needs to be occasionally repositioned.
Does anyone have long-term experience with felt pads or glides specifically for KALLAX? What advantages and disadvantages do you see, particularly regarding durability, protection, and maintenance effort?
Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

I’m following this thread because I’ve been thinking about making my KALLAX shelf easier to move. Here’s a tip:
If you choose gliders, I recommend ones with soft rubber or felt pads. This helps prevent slipping and marks on sensitive floors.
Also, be sure to clean the surface before attaching them. Dust or small stones under the gliders can still scratch the floor.
If you use felt pads, make sure they are thick enough. Thin felt wears out quickly.
I have felt pads about 3 mm (0.1 inches) thick, and they have already lasted over six months while providing excellent cushioning.

Are there gliders that work well on parquet floors without leaving marks?Yes, there are so-called gliders with felt or rubber coatings designed specifically for delicate floors. This combination minimizes abrasion and hardly causes scratches. When installing, it’s important to ensure clean and dry surfaces so the glider adheres properly and doesn’t slip.

Felt pads often act as a cushion and effectively reduce scratching noisesI agree with that, especially in quiet living areas you can clearly notice the difference. So, if you value a calm environment and rarely move the KALLAX, felt pads are the ideal solution.

So if you value a quiet environment and rarely move the KALLAX, felt pads are the optimal solutionThanks for the confirmation! I think I'll go with the felt pad style; it just looks cozier and protects the floor. And if I want to rearrange, I'll just carefully lift the shelf 😉
Who says you always have to move everything around?

Does anyone here have long-term experience with felt pads or gliders specifically for KALLAX?I have been using my KALLAX for over 4 years, mostly with traditional felt pads under the feet. The advantage is excellent floor protection on parquet flooring, with minimal noise.
After about 2 years, I had to replace the leather felt rings, which is straightforward – just peel them off and stick on new ones.
However, if you move the furniture frequently, I recommend using high-quality gliding rubber in addition to felt. This makes moving the furniture easier while still protecting the floor just as well.
Summary:
- For a fixed location: felt pads
- For frequent repositioning: gliders with felt covering
This way, you can combine them optimally depending on your needs.
