I have a problem with my Ikea Billy shelves where the drawers squeak when pulled out and pushed back in. The sliding rails are not completely worn out, but the squeaking is quite annoying. I have considered using lubricants on the rails, but I’m unsure which product would be best without damaging the wood surfaces or the mechanism. I’m also curious if there could be other causes for the squeaking, especially with furniture made from particleboard. Has anyone had experience with this specific model and can offer advice on how to fix the issue permanently?
The squeaking in Billy drawers can have several causes: 1) The drawer slides are dry or dirty, 2) Wood or particleboard surfaces are rubbing against each other, 3) Screws in the slide rails are loose, 4) The rollers or plastic glides are worn out.
If you want to use a lubricant, I recommend silicone spray because it doesn’t stick, doesn’t attract dust, and won’t damage the plastic. Alternatively, wax or PTFE (Teflon) sticks also work well on the slides. Otherwise, you can remove the drawer completely and check whether the slides are free of dirt and move smoothly.
I also recommend lightly roughening the contact surfaces of the particleboard with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 240) and possibly treating them with furniture wax. This reduces friction and squeaking. Make sure to tighten the screws on the slides so nothing is loose.
What exactly is the condition of your drawer slides? Are they metal profiles with rollers, or just plastic glides?

How would you describe the condition of your drawer slides? Are they metal profiles with rollers or just plastic glides?Thank you for the detailed overview! The guides are metal profiles, with the drawer running on small plastic glides. The screws are tight as far as I can tell; I just checked them. The squeaking occurs evenly when pulling and pushing, so I suspect the slide is either dry or dirty. The surface of the drawer itself is painted, so that shouldn’t really be a factor.
Silicone spray is definitely the best choice for metal rail and plastic glider combinations like these, as it doesn’t become sticky. When you try this, make sure to remove the drawers completely and clean the runners with a dry cloth to remove dust and residues.
Please avoid using WD-40 or oil, as they attract dirt and tend to cause more problems in the long run.
If the squeaking persists, gently smoothing the plastic gliders with very fine sandpaper can help to remove small irregularities.
