ᐅ What to do if MALM drawers are squeaking?

Hello everyone,

I have a specific issue with my Malm dresser from IKEA: after some time, the drawers start to squeak, especially when pulling them out and closing them again. It produces a rather unpleasant, creaking noise that becomes quite annoying over time.

I suspect it might be due to the drawer slides or possibly insufficient lubrication. The squeaking doesn’t seem to be caused by improper installation or overloading, as the drawers squeak both when empty and filled.

Has anyone experienced this problem? How can it be resolved exactly? Is it enough to clean the drawer slides, or do they need to be replaced? What lubricants are best suited to solve this long-term without damaging the mechanics?

I would appreciate concrete advice, as I don’t want to disassemble the whole unit or use unsuitable tools. Thanks in advance!

Has anyone here tried this before and can confirm that it positively affects durability in the long term? Or is there more risk that the powder will harden or clump over time?

Baby powder is actually a well-kept trick that reduces friction without the drawbacks of lubricants. However, it is important that the tracks are completely dry and clean before application to prevent clumping. In damp rooms, it can clump more quickly, so its use there is not ideal.

The powder should also be applied sparingly – a thin layer is sufficient.

From my experience, the effect lasts several months, after which the procedure can be easily repeated.

Yesterday, I removed the drawer, thoroughly cleaned the slides, and then applied silicone spray very sparingly after everything was completely dry. Afterwards, I slowly pushed the drawer in and out several times as recommended.

The squeaking is actually gone for now! Thanks for all your detailed help. I will keep monitoring it in daily use and, if needed, add baby powder.

Does anyone have an estimate of how often this treatment needs to be done until the effect becomes permanent? I’m afraid it might have to be done annually.

For Malm drawers, it is common to renew the lubrication about once a year with normal use. If the drawers are opened frequently, it may be necessary to do this more often. Regular cleaning is important, as dust or particles can reduce the effectiveness of the lubrication.

A combination of cleaning and sparing application of silicone spray or baby powder usually works best.
