Hello everyone, I currently have a somewhat technical issue with an IKEA Billy bookshelf: the door latch on one of the doors is broken, meaning it no longer holds properly, the door doesn’t close cleanly or lock correctly. My question is: what practical and effective steps or solutions can I take if the door latch on a Billy bookshelf breaks? Are there options to repair the latch myself, obtain replacement parts, or make sensible modifications? I would appreciate concrete suggestions and tips that also consider common causes of failure and material aspects.

First, check if the lock is just loose. If so, tighten the screws. If that doesn’t help, order replacement small parts from IKEA or buy a new locking unit.

Your description is already good, samson4. Important to know: The Billy door lock is usually a small plastic or metal part with a spring mechanism. In case of defects, it often makes sense to first clean the mechanism and apply a light oil if it sticks. If the plastic is cracked, there are standardized replacement parts available from IKEA that can be ordered directly online – often the best option. Alternatively, small clamp hinges or magnetic catches are practical solutions if the original mechanism is no longer available.

If the lock is broken, you can also install magnetic catches. This is simple and works very well with Billy doors.

Hey, does dirt or dust sometimes build up inside the lock? That can really slow down the mechanism. A little contact cleaner or a spray of silicone lubricant, and voilà, the door works smoothly like new 🙂 And if that doesn’t help, magnetic catches instead of the original hook part are my second recommendation – they look good and make opening and closing fun!

Magnetic catches are a proven alternative. It is important to adjust the dimensions precisely to ensure the door closes flush. Another option is to reorder the original part directly from IKEA or through third-party suppliers. In general, the repair should be carried out with consideration for material compatibility to avoid damage to the wood or the hinges.
