Hello everyone,
I’m currently considering the idea of customizing my Ikea Hemnes bed to make it more unique and practical than the original version. I would like to know about any DIY ideas and modification options specifically for Hemnes beds. I’m especially interested in approaches that go beyond simple cosmetic changes (like painting or applying decals) and include functional improvements or clever additions. For example, optimizing storage space, installing lighting, or making adjustments to the bed frame itself.
Do you have any experience or concrete suggestions on how to make such a bed more interesting and useful from a DIY perspective? Which materials and tools are recommended, and what should be paid special attention to in order to keep it stable and safe?
Looking forward to your ideas and tips!

That’s a very interesting question you’re asking.
With the HEMNES bed, there are mainly two aspects that lend themselves well to DIY improvements: storage and lighting.
- Storage: Many people take advantage of the space under the bed frame to install drawers or fit existing storage boxes precisely underneath. It is important to measure carefully here to avoid compromising stability.
- Lighting: Installing LED strips along the headboard or under the bed frame creates a cozy atmosphere and provides practical bedside lighting.
When doing this kind of DIY, it is important to choose the right screws (preferably wood screws with pre-drilling) and, if necessary, reinforce load-bearing areas, especially if the bed is raised to create extra storage space.

I would like to add some technically sound details to the previous advice.
The HEMNES bed is made of solid pine wood and is well suited for additional modifications due to the wood’s structure. However, the structural load capacity must always be checked when making changes.
- For storage extensions under the bed, I recommend using oiled plywood or MDF as drawer materials that fit within the existing frame.
- When installing lighting, ensure safe wiring and appropriate power supplies, preferably energy-efficient LED strips with low heat generation.
- If the bed is raised to create more storage space, stability should be improved with diagonal braces or additional legs.
Tools needed include a cordless drill, sandpaper, wood glue, and a tape measure. After assembly, a thorough check of the load capacity is recommended, especially at the corner joints.

I would like to add some practical DIY suggestions for the HEMNES bed, especially for those who may not have much experience with such projects.
- Painting or staining: If you want to change the appearance of the bed, I recommend sanding the wood first to help the color adhere better. HEMNES is sensitive to moisture, so use a durable wood varnish.
- Built-in shelf or storage at the headboard: You can attach a narrow shelf on the inside of the headboard, which can serve as a nightstand replacement or for decorative items.
- DIY bed drawers: Individual wooden boxes on casters or with handles are easy to make and provide ample storage space.
- Important for beginners: Always test the material first in a small, hidden area to see what is possible.
Such a project brings a lot of joy and makes the bed especially versatile.

I additionally installed a small reading lamp that can be charged via USB. This helps avoid the mess with bedside lamps and power outlets. Plus, tidying up in the morning becomes a lot more enjoyable.
Sometimes people underestimate how much comfort simple DIY changes can bring, even if they feel uncertain about remodeling at first.
