Hello everyone, I hope there are some people here who are knowledgeable about furniture and DIY projects. I own several pieces from the Ikea Hemnes series and have long been unsatisfied with the finish—mainly because it is quite prone to scratches and stains. Now I’m wondering if there are any recommended DIY alternatives or improvements for the surfaces of HEMNES furniture that can match or even surpass the look and feel of the original. I’m particularly interested in whether different materials or techniques are suitable for increasing durability and possibly changing the style, without needing to use professional workshop services. Do you have experience with such methods? Which DIY approaches work well, and what should be avoided?

Very interesting question, Rensan32!

To address your follow-up regarding durability: Chalk paint is great for the look, but it is naturally quite delicate. This means that if you use it, you should definitely apply a tough sealant afterward—preferably several coats of clear varnish or hard wax oil. Only then will the surface be truly suitable for everyday use.

I recommend the following procedure:
- Sand the furniture thoroughly until the old finish is matte and roughened.
- Apply a primer if needed (e.g., stain-blocking primer), especially if you want to cover dark spots or discoloration.
- Apply the chalk paint in several thin layers, sanding lightly between coats.
- Apply at least two coats of clear varnish for protection, hard wax is even better.

Very important: Do not underestimate the drying time between steps.

Without sealing, chalk paint is not durable enough; even furniture oil often does not provide sufficient protection.

I would be interested to know how heavily your furniture is used? For example, children, pets, frequent use?

I really appreciate that the limitations of DIY solutions are openly discussed here. I once tried to upgrade a Hemnes shelf with chalk paint myself. At first, it looked great, but after a few months and frequent use, small chips and scratches started to appear.

That’s why I can only recommend this: if the piece of furniture is used heavily in everyday life, it’s better to opt for professional painting or special sealants. Still, it’s fun to add your personal touch, but you have to accept some compromises in durability.

I admire everyone who has the time and patience for a project like this and wish you lots of success, Rensan32!

If you prefer a natural surface: wood oil plus fine sanding protects and changes the appearance only minimally.

For stronger protection, clear varnish is the better option, especially for high wear and tear.

Hello Rensan32, just dropping by casually! 😄

So, DIY means you’re allowed to tinker and experiment. I once painted a HEMNES cabinet with chalk paint and then sealed it with wax – it looked really stylish, but as already mentioned, it’s not suitable for heavy everyday use.

My lifehack: For surfaces that get frequent contact (handles, tabletops), you can cover them with a thin acrylic sheet or a custom-fit protective film. This way, you enhance the look and don’t have to worry about damage.

Of course, this isn’t pure DIY – but the mix makes the difference! 😉

Great idea, KNUTGI! This way, the look remains unique, but the effort for repairs is greatly reduced. You almost feel like a furniture wizard! 🧙‍♂️✨

I would only recommend using transparent materials, otherwise, you lose the beautiful wood appearance. In the end, it’s all about trying it out and enjoying the process.

Thank you very much, Surela, that’s an important question! My furniture is definitely used daily, especially a coffee table and a TV stand. There are no small children, but there is a cat who likes to jump on the furniture and sometimes gets its claws caught.

Therefore, I want not only to improve the appearance but also to ensure it is as durable as possible.

Also, I prefer a DIY solution that isn’t too complicated, as I have limited tools and experience. Do you have any tips on how best to get started?
