Hello everyone, I am currently planning to use a BILLY shelf from IKEA in a damp room—specifically in our guest shower bathroom, which only has limited ventilation and occasionally becomes humid. My question is: What should I definitely consider when using a BILLY shelf in such a moist environment? I would like to know if the shelf material (particleboard with a foil coating) is suitable for increased humidity, or if I should take special protective measures, such as treating it with water-repellent products or applying an additional sealant. I am also interested in whether the manufacturer explicitly advises against using it in damp rooms and what your experiences are regarding the durability of these shelves under such conditions. I look forward to your assessments and tips on how to safely and securely use a BILLY shelf in an environment with occasional moisture.

I find this question very relevant because you shouldn’t underestimate how much moisture can damage furniture over time.

When I once placed a wooden shelf in a slightly damp basement, it warped over time and developed mold – which was really frustrating. I wish I had been properly informed from the start and knew the right preventive measures to avoid this.

Therefore, my advice is to apply a bit more protection, check regularly, and if you notice any changes in the material, act quickly. This way, you can save yourself trouble and costs. I wish you success with your project and hope the shelf lasts a long time. 🙂

Another question that is often overlooked: How quickly and carefully such shelves can be replaced or repaired when showing signs of moisture.

That is an interesting point and really resonates with me. In fact, replacing BILLY shelves is relatively easy due to their low price, which reassures me somewhat. Nevertheless, I want to keep the shelf as long as possible without moisture issues occurring.

1. Avoid direct contact with the floor 2. Protect the back panel 3. Seal the surface 4. Ensure ventilation

I find these four points to be a very good approach. I think I will try placing the shelf on small risers, treat all edges with varnish, and consciously improve my ventilation habits.

Has anyone else recommended specific products that work well for sealing the edges of particleboard? So far, I have only looked at clear varnish from the hardware store but am unsure if that is sufficient.

A quick recommendation: There is a clear varnish for wood specifically designed for kitchens or bathrooms – it is often labeled as "waterproof" or "suitable for damp rooms." It’s affordable and can be easily applied with a brush or roller.

Great idea – especially the cut edges are sensitive! And otherwise, always keep a bit of humor. 🙂 If you check regularly, you can quickly react if anything starts to swell. Have fun with your project!
