Dear forum members,

I have purchased an apartment from a developer. The standard specifications are already quite generous (e.g., tiles in the size of 60x60cm (24x24 inches) as standard).

However, I have now chosen even larger tile formats. Do you consider the following additional charges for installation to be reasonable (pure labor costs, additional charges for other items are separate):
- Extra charge for laying floor tiles 80x80cm (32x32 inches) instead of 60x60cm (24x24 inches): EUR 22 plus VAT per sqm (square meter)
- Extra charge for laying large format wall tiles 120x240cm (48x96 inches) instead of 30x60cm (12x24 inches): EUR 93 plus VAT per sqm
We are talking about approximately 19sqm (204 sq ft) of flooring and 35sqm (377 sq ft) of wall area in two bathrooms.

These price increases seem extremely high to me.

The larger the tiles, the more difficult the handling becomes. Beyond a certain size, you need more than one person. Additionally, it doesn’t speed up the process. This also applies to cutting/adjustments and creating openings.

And are you really referring to 120x240?

We only have 30x60cm (12x24 inches) tiles included. We pay the same surcharge of 19.50 euros including VAT for both 60x60cm (24x24 inches) and 80x80cm (32x32 inches) tiles. The tiler said that the effort and amount of adhesive required are the same for 60x60cm and 80x80cm tiles. Your large wall tile is probably very difficult to install; the wall must be perfectly flat first, and this large tile won’t simply stick to the wall—it needs to be properly secured and allowed to dry. I would also consider whether cracks might develop in the tile because of its size.

Best regards,
Sabine

That’s exactly as Sabine says. The high surcharge for the large format is justified. Our tile prices are 55 per square meter (5.1 per square foot) standard, including tiles at 25. For large formats, there is up to a 150% surcharge due to the need for a second worker, special adhesive, and so on.

I have negotiated the installation of large-format tiles in the additional agreements.

That means I am completely flexible regarding the size now, or am I misunderstanding something?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but it somehow fits.

Well, 80 by 80 is already quite large, but will it also support those man-high blocks?
