Hello,
There is a strong odor coming from my kitchen sink and the trap.
I have already tried leaving vinegar and salt to sit overnight, which eliminated the smell for two days.

I also completely disassembled and cleaned the trap.
This did not help either.

What could be causing this?
What can I do to fix it?

Attached are two pictures

The previous tenant did not have something like that, I am in contact with her.

This must not have started only after you moved apartments. Ask the other neighbors.

Actually, there shouldn’t be any odor if there is water in the trap. The trap can only dry out if either very little water is used on your end (then it simply evaporates). We can probably rule that out since you do wash dishes and so on. Or if there is occasional or continuous negative pressure on the wastewater side that sucks the water out of your trap.

Ideas:
- Run hot water and then check by touch whether there is water in your trap.
- Run water regularly (hot water?) and observe the smell (for example, stay at home on a Sunday and run water for one minute every hour to keep the trap filled).
- Try to carefully observe and listen to determine if the trap is being sucked dry.

Questions:
- Are there any leaks in the wastewater pipe after the trap? The photo suggests a rather unusual setup; is everything sealed properly? Is there any slip joint with play?
- What type of angle valve is that there?

Alternative approach:
- Report the issue to the landlord (“odor”), request repair, set a deadline, and if the problem persists after the deadline, reduce the rent accordingly. (Don’t waste the money, you never know...).

One night, I poured half a liter of vinegar and salt into each drain. After that, the smell was gone for two days. However, it came back again...

It’s possible that the distance from the trap to the drain is too long and the slope is insufficient, causing unpleasant odors to develop here.

Maybe the following installation can help fix this. Of course, I might be completely wrong, but I’m sure the experts will let me know 😉

Try using Clorix, but please be careful with it. Make sure to rinse off the vinegar thoroughly and watch out for your clothing. Also, pour Clorix into the drain overflow. Let it sit for a while, and then the drain will be completely clean. I would bet that afterwards there won’t be any smell left.
