Hello,
we are planning a recessed niche/shelf in our shower measuring 50 x 30cm (20 x 12 inches). The site manager asked me at what height we would like to have it. Therefore, my question to you is: who else has a similar niche/shelf and at what height does yours start? It would also be interesting to compare your measurements.

Thank you in advance

I can calculate the height I need to specify, or do you think 1.20m (4 feet) is fine because of the 5x 30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inch) tiles and ignoring the grout lines? I don’t want the shelf to start in the middle of a tile.

Are you installing the tiles yourselves? You definitely need to take the grout joints into account. Also consider that you might have a shower tray installed or a slope in the tiles for drainage. You can probably compensate a little with the grout joints, though.

My father-in-law will install it. We will have a walk-in shower. I’m not sure what grout joint size to plan for; I’ve read something about 2–5mm (0.08–0.2 inches). I could use that as a basis for the calculation.

The drywall installer should make the opening slightly larger. The tiler can then easily adjust it to their dimensions (measured from the wall, following the tile grid, and from the inside, considering the size of a tile). This works even if the drywall installer, the tiler, and the father-in-law are all the same person.

Ah, okay, thanks for the information, so I don’t really need to worry about the exact height.
We would like to have the compartment at 1.20 meters (4 feet), which would work well with 30x60 cm (12x24 inches) tiles. If we allow 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) for all the grout lines, then it comes to 1.215 meters (4 feet).

But I hope you are also planning to include some slope in your walk-in shower?
