Hello,
we are planning a recessed niche/shelf in our shower measuring 50 x 30cm (20 x 12 inches). The site manager asked me at what height we would like to have it. Therefore, my question to you is: who else has a similar niche/shelf and at what height does yours start? It would also be interesting to compare your measurements.

Thank you in advance

We used the tiles as a reference — I believe ours range from 1.2 m to 1.5 m (4 to 5 feet) high and are 30x30 cm (12x12 inches) in size. This is a very practical size and height for shower products — keeping it limited also helps reduce the issue of nearly empty bottles cluttering the space.

That’s exactly where I thought we should align with the tiles. Since the niche will be installed beforehand, I think 120 cm (47 inches) is a good height, also taking into account the tile size of 30 x 60 cm (12 x 24 inches).

Thanks for the photo

Could you also please provide some recommendations regarding the depth (in our case, the question is whether a 11cm (4.3 inches) or a solid 17.5cm (6.9 inches) partition wall is necessary).

Thank you.

Hello,

We had our niche installed both in size (about as large as a tile, 30 x 60cm (12 x 24 inches)) and height (above the 4th row—roughly starting at 1.20m (4 feet) plus grout) accordingly.

As for the depth, I would recommend a minimum of 10cm (4 inches) so that shower gel and shampoo bottles can also fit sideways.

One thing you absolutely need to pay attention to: the tile covering the bottom of the niche should be installed by your tiler with a very slight slope towards the shower. This allows any splashed water in the niche to drain away on its own and not have to be wiped out manually all the time.

We also have a slight slope, and it works perfectly without the risk of the full shampoo bottles slipping out and shattering your toes...

Regards,

We have integrated the compartments into a Ytong stud wall and have about 10 cm (4 inches) "rough construction depth" – so about 8 cm (3 inches) after tiling. I wouldn't recommend less, as the bottles are meant to fit with the deeper side into the compartment. Just measure a few bottles you use.

For a freestanding partition wall, 11 cm (4.3 inches) would be quite tight, wouldn’t it?
