Hello everyone,

I am considering adding rubber bumpers to the doors of my IKEA Kallax shelf unit to soften the closing and make it quieter. My question to you is: What experiences have you had with retrofitting rubber bumpers on Kallax doors?

I am especially interested in which type of rubber bumpers work best, how easy the installation is, and whether it really makes a noticeable difference in noise reduction.

Also, do you have any tips for mounting them so the doors fit well and don’t stick?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I used simple self-adhesive rubber bumpers. Installation was straightforward, just stick them onto the door frame. Since then, the doors close much more quietly.

When retrofitting rubber buffers on Kallax doors, I recommend silicone or EPDM buffers. These materials provide good elasticity and durability. Installation is usually done using adhesive tape or screws – adhesive is generally sufficient. It is important to position the buffers at the contact points so that the doors do not stick but are gently cushioned.

Thanks for the tip about EPDM! I wasn’t aware of the material quality before, and it sounds reasonable because of its durability.

How exactly do you attach the bumpers? Are adhesive strips sufficient, or did you use screws because you might want a stronger hold? Do you perhaps have standard dimensions that work well with Kallax?

I chose rubber bumpers with a self-adhesive backing and attached them to the corners of the door. Installation is simple, and if removed carefully later, they do not leave any marks. I recommend cleaning the surface thoroughly beforehand to ensure better adhesion. This significantly improves sound insulation without causing the doors to stick.

Experience shows that the position and size of the rubber buffers are crucial. Buffers that are too large or too many can cause jamming. I recommend small, flat buffers on the upper and lower inner sides of the doors. Due to the chipboard used, the doors are sensitive to excessive pressure.

Aligning the doors by slightly adjusting the hinges before attaching the buffers can improve the fit.
