Hello everyone,

I have been dealing with a problem for some time now: a large amount of dust collects behind my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA. The unit is placed directly against the wall, but because of the open compartments, dust travels back there, making me feel like I never fully clean behind it during each cleaning session.

I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences and how you protect yourself from the dust buildup behind the KALLAX? Are there practical solutions to permanently control the dust issue – perhaps special covers, back panels, or other clever ideas?

I look forward to your tips and experiences on how you handle this common problem!

A back panel makes a big difference, especially if you want to reduce dust buildup.

That matches my assumption – a back panel can really make sense here. I was just worried it might be too much effort or possibly expensive.

I just attached it with double-sided mounting tape.

That sounds very practical, especially since I prefer not to drill. However, I wonder if the mounting tape will hold on rough walls between the shelf and the wall? In my case, the wall has some texture.

That might be challenging. Mounting tape adheres best to smooth surfaces. For rough or textured walls, I would recommend using small brackets or screw clamps instead.

Alternatively, you could gently smooth the wall with fine sandpaper before applying the tape, or use silicone as an adhesive, as it adapts better to uneven surfaces.

Just as an additional note: If you don’t want to place the shelf directly against the wall, you can put small furniture glides or felt pads under the legs. This makes it easy to move the furniture and makes cleaning behind it simpler.

I completely understand! I was in the same situation. Velcro strips are the perfect solution for me – minimal effort and the shelf remains undamaged. Plus, I can quickly remove the fabric panel when needed and vacuum easily.
