Hello everyone,

We are currently working on our paving.

The paving stones are from Kann Bausysteme and are called Parchetto.

We have the following issue. See pictures:

Outdoor area with gray-black paving stones and a red cable on the ground

Modern white detached house with gray paved area in the front yard; construction materials visible.

Is this type of installation acceptable? When the stones were laid, we were not at home but at work. Should the paver have been more careful?
Because the dark stones are placed directly next to the light ones, it looks very odd.
When we looked at the samples at the store before ordering, it was not clear that the color variations in this paving would be so pronounced.

The laying pattern looks like this:

Wooden crate with pumpkins, decorative gourds, and straw on paved surface.

We actually like this part. We are desperate and don’t know what to do. We don’t like how it looks at all.

Best regards

I’ll ask directly what exactly bothers you about the current installation:
Are the stones not the color you expected?
or
Do you not like the style of the paving?

This is not entirely clear from the answers here.
And the next question: Did you order the stones yourself or did the paver order them?

Because that isn’t entirely clear from the answers here.

I ordered the stones myself.

What really bothers us is that the color scheme doesn’t match. They advertise two light shades—that is, different tones of gray. But many stones are completely white. As if someone just dumped a bag of white flour on them during firing. And others are completely dark. Another problem is that some stones have a very strong blue hue.

I will go to the local store again today to take another look.

If necessary, it will probably come down to the paver replacing individual stones or simply exchanging them multiple times.

PS: At a different home improvement store, they only had the larger size, Parchetto Largo, in stock. But that’s how we had imagined the color scheme.

Show display with gray concrete pavers for terrace or garden flooring.

Ok, I actually thought the stones looked quite nice in the picture. It was just the installation that bothered me.

In my opinion, this is also a problem that, as you have already described, needs to be resolved between you and KANN Bausysteme.
I’ve also learned here that there are two different paving manufacturers, KANN and KANN Bausysteme.

Here you can clearly see how different stone colors and patterns can cause significant problems. It is extremely complicated to install when you have to examine each individual stone to check if it fits or not. A landscaping contractor can hardly manage this unless you explicitly book it as an extra service. In that case, they have to charge considerably more per square meter because the job takes much longer. You can also immediately tell who did their own paving work. A professional does it well and neatly, but only you can do it perfectly. The last 5% towards perfection costs 50% more time.

Regarding the current topic:
The manufacturer/your supplier is offering you a 50% discount on their stones. What amount are we actually talking about? It’s hard to estimate the price per square meter for your paving stones. Does the total sum make it worthwhile to possibly overlook some issues?

The landscaping contractor could at most be criticized for not noticing the wrong pattern earlier and stopping the work or mixing it differently. You might be able to get them to swap out a few stones at no extra cost (roughly half a day’s work) to fix the worst spots. In the end, you console yourself with the 50% discount and just let it go. The stones will also fade significantly over time, as can be clearly seen in your recent photo (2 posts above). Those stones won’t last 3–4 years. Over time, it will look better, and you’ll be happy with the inexpensive stones.

You should really think carefully before making a big deal out of this. The 50% discount is already a fair concession in exchange for avoiding further hassle. As mentioned, it depends on the price per square meter. If 50% equals $1000, further stress is not worth it. If it’s $5000, you might consider demanding a higher percentage. But quickly, this could also result in 0% and you might have to take legal action. Since the driveway belongs to the new construction, no legal expenses insurance applies. (If it does, please name your legal expenses insurance provider so I can switch to it as well...)

Just ask if the bricks fade. If they do, take the money and that's it.

Clearly, they do fade. All concrete pavers fade, and quite significantly. The darker the color, the more they fade.
If you want colorfastness, you need to choose clinker bricks or paving stones.
