Milchbrötchen8 Jan 2016 11:38For my office, I need a special combination of cabinets and drawers. Specifically, I require many shallow drawers that are fully integrated into the cabinet system (so no separate filing cabinets, which are either unattractive or much too expensive).
I had the idea to realize this with Metod cabinets:
- This is much cheaper than buying from a proper office furniture manufacturer.
- So far, I have hardly found any office furniture systems where you can order fully integrated drawers that are both large and shallow. And if you do find them, they are unaffordable.
- The whole setup needs to match the rest of the room's color scheme, which is possible with IKEA.
My problem is that there is no tall cabinet with a width of 80cm (31 inches) and a depth of 60cm (24 inches). So I’m thinking: I will simply stack two base cabinets 80cm (31 inches) high and one base cabinet 60cm (24 inches) high on top of each other (of course properly screwed together so they don’t slide or fall forward). At the bottom, Maximera drawers, and above that, shelves with flap doors in front.
Since I have 2.60m (8 feet 6 inches) of height available, the cabinet wall could look like this:
Cabinet 1: tall cabinet 60cm x 60cm x 220cm (24in x 24in x 87in)
Cabinet 2: base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 80cm (31in x 24in x 31in) base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 80cm (31in x 24in x 31in) base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 60cm (31in x 24in x 24in)
Cabinet 3: base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 80cm (31in x 24in x 31in) base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 80cm (31in x 24in x 31in) base cabinet 80cm x 60cm x 60cm (31in x 24in x 24in)
Cabinet 4: tall cabinet 40cm x 60cm x 220cm (16in x 24in x 87in)
On top, a suitable countertop would be added to cover all cabinets.
1. Question:
What do you think of this idea in general?
2. Question for the experts:
If I place a Metod tall cabinet 2.20m (7 feet 3 inches) high next to a 60cm (24 inches) base cabinet stacked on top of two 80cm (31 inches) high base cabinets (none of the cabinets will have a plinth, everything will stand directly on 1cm (0.4 inches) high feet on the floor), will the cabinets 220cm (87 inches) and the 80/80/60cm (31/31/24in) stacks be exactly the same height? Or will there be a height difference of about 0.5cm, 1cm, or 2cm (0.2in, 0.4in, or 0.8in) due to IKEA’s listed dimensions not being 100% accurate?
Best regards,
Matthias

maybe you should still attach a 260cm (102 inches) panel underneath the floor. Otherwise, the lowest doors/drawers might get stuck when opening.

Juliette W8 Jan 2016 15:22Office with Metod works really well:

I just didn’t need the full 60cm (24 inches) depth, because for folders and such, the 37cm (15 inches) deep cabinets are sufficient.

IKEA-Experte8 Jan 2016 17:06Juliette, you have a METOD kitchen. The base cabinets, without the upper crossbars, have an exact height of 800 mm (31.5 inches), right?

robi_aus_ffm8 Jan 2016 17:32Instead of the top cross braces, you can also attach shelves inside the cabinets at the top. It looks neater when viewed from the front and is also more stable...

do you really need 80cm (31.5 inches) width?
If not, you could forget all those considerations, and it would also look better visually if you chose, for example, 60_40_60_40_60 or 40_60_60_60_40 for the tall cabinets. There are also options with 260cm (102 inches).
