Hello everyone,
I have a rather unusual problem: my pet, a very curious cat, loves to climb on the Kallax shelf and use the individual compartments as "levels." Unfortunately, the removable inserts don’t hold up well to the weight and stress from climbing and jumping—they bend, fall out, or break. I have already tried different materials and versions, but so far haven’t found a satisfactory solution.
Do you have any tips on how to make the inserts more stable or secure so that my Kallax shelf can better withstand my cat’s climbing activities? I would like to know if the shelf can be reinforced with simple measures or if there are special inserts or accessories better suited for this purpose.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The shelf shouldn’t be permanently altered in case I want to use it differently later. That’s a good point! If you want to make the stabilization as reversible as possible, double-sided tape could be an option for carpet or upholstery. It can be removed later without leaving marks.
Wooden strips can also be designed to be fixed on the inside of the inserts, for example with small screw hooks or angle brackets, so nothing is visible on the outside.
If you like, I can also provide sources for sturdy inserts if building them yourself is too time-consuming.
Cats with their climbing instincts are really a challenge for furniture makers! 🙂
To prevent permanent damage to the inserts caused by your pet’s activity, I recommend combining material reinforcement with additional fastening:
1. Use sturdy wooden boxes or custom-made inserts made from plywood – this material is more durable than MDF.
2. Screw the inserts to the back panel or the sides of the shelving unit for extra stability.
3. For scratch protection, specialized scratch films or sisal covers designed for furniture are recommended.
This approach ensures longer durability and allows you to reverse the modifications depending on the model.

Screw the inserts to the back panel or the sides of the shelf as an additional fix.May I ask how exactly you screw the inserts to the shelf without significantly affecting the appearance or functionality? I would prefer not to drill holes in the shelf if there is a way to still secure the inserts firmly.
Would it also help to clamp the inserts in the shelf using so-called clamping profiles or similar, without necessarily drilling?

Clamping profiles made of metal or plastic can hold the inserts in place. Rubber pads prevent slipping.
This way, you avoid damaging the shelf. Give it a try.
In addition to the points mentioned, here are some precise tips:
- Check the maximum load capacity of the Kallax shelf and the individual inserts with the manufacturer.
- Use quick-release fasteners strategically to keep the inserts movable when needed.
- Consider installing additional intermediate shelves to distribute the load more evenly.
- If you use thicker inserts made of plywood, ensure a minimum thickness of 15 mm (0.6 inches) for stability.
- Finally, I recommend anti-slip pads between the insert and the shelf to further reduce movement.
These measures can significantly extend the lifespan of your inserts.

Magnetic strips from hardware stores are inexpensive and easy to install.
