ᐅ My KALLAX loses stability after every move – any ideas?

Good morning everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelf: after each move, whether it’s a relocation or just rearranging within the room, the shelf loses a noticeable amount of stability. The structure feels wobbly, and sometimes the shelf can even be slightly pressed in or shifted. It’s a classic KALLAX 4x4 with the usual shelves, and I have already checked that all screws are still tight – which seems to be the case.

I suspect that either the original connectors are not stable enough for transportation, or I am doing something wrong during disassembly/reassembly.

Does anyone know this problem and have tips on how to ensure stability even after frequent transport? I’m especially interested in mechanical reinforcements or tricks to keep the frame stable without having to rebuild the entire shelf.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Minifix dowels wear out quickly. Replacing them helps. Attach the back panel made of plywood. Use brackets for reinforcement.

mount small brackets at the bottom corners

Exactly. Insert brackets at the bottom, then the shelf stands more stable even on uneven floors.

One more tip: Use medium-sized metal brackets for the corners instead of the very small ones, and fasten them with wood screws.

Securely anchoring the corners greatly increases stiffness. If possible, screw the back panel directly to the side walls—many just slot it in or tack it, which does not hold up well over time.

Also, check that the floors fit properly into the pre-made grooves or slots of the sides and are not loose; these are often weak points.

The frame of the KALLAX is made from chipboard with a laminate finish, which is not very resistant to mechanical stress.

Recommendation:
- Replace the original back panel with 6-8mm (0.24-0.31 inch) plywood
- Use additional corner brackets at all corners
- For frequent assembly and disassembly: use metal frames or profiles for reinforcement

This significantly improves stability, even with frequent transport.

Another important aspect is how the shelf is stored and secured during transport. Even the best construction can come apart if the furniture shifts around without protection.

Ideally, the KALLAX should be cushioned with blankets and secured with strong straps that hold everything tightly without putting excessive pressure on individual joints.

Additionally, small wooden strips or corner protectors can be used to protect edges and joints from impacts.

Thank you very much for the many helpful tips! Here is a summary for me:

- Check and, if necessary, replace the minifix connectors
- Replace the back panel with a more stable wooden board (plywood)
- Attach metal brackets to the corners to reinforce the frame
- Follow the recommended assembly sequence carefully
- Disassemble as much as possible for transport and provide good padding

I will proceed this way and report on how stable the shelf remains afterward.

If anyone has advice on how to better secure the shelves during assembly, I would appreciate that as well.
