ᐅ My pet often leaves small pressure marks on the Kallax shelves – is there a protective coating to prevent this?

Hello everyone, I have a small but somewhat annoying issue with my Kallax shelf: My pet, specifically my cat, repeatedly causes very small dents on the surface of the shelf, especially on the corners and edges of the shelves. These dents are not deep but are visible and bother me aesthetically. The shelf is placed in a spot where my cat often leans or climbs up. Now I’m wondering if there is a gentle, preferably transparent coating that can be applied to this material (mostly melamine-coated particle board) to protect the wood from these minor damages without affecting the appearance. Ideally, it would be something non-toxic in case my pet licks it with their paw. Does anyone have experience with this or can recommend a specific solution? Thanks in advance!

One more practical tip:

If you decide to use a protective film, small air bubbles may form along the edges if the film does not fully conform to the shapes. Therefore, films that can be easily adjusted to the surfaces using a heat gun or hairdryer (thermoelastic) are recommended. Some automotive films have this property.

Important: The material of the Kallax is melamine-coated particleboard, a rather smooth and impermeable surface, so films generally adhere very well. However, removing the film later becomes more difficult the longer it has been applied.

Additionally, I would like to add: If you frequently have minor pressure marks caused by your pet, soft plastic or silicone edge protectors for furniture could be an option. These are applied to the sides of corners or edges and provide mechanical protection against pressure marks. They are available in transparent or neutral colors, easy to install, and removable.

This reduces surface wear and can help prevent damage in the long term.

Hello again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the many good and often very detailed tips!

I am seriously considering using the self-adhesive protective film, especially the thermoelastic types, as I am convinced by their flexibility. At the same time, I will treat a small test area with a pet-friendly acrylic coating to check the results in terms of appearance and slip resistance.

I will report back as soon as I have gathered more experience. Thanks again to everyone for the factual and helpful contributions! 🙂
