Hello everyone, I have a small but somewhat annoying issue with my Kallax shelf: My pet, specifically my cat, repeatedly causes very small dents on the surface of the shelf, especially on the corners and edges of the shelves. These dents are not deep but are visible and bother me aesthetically. The shelf is placed in a spot where my cat often leans or climbs up. Now I’m wondering if there is a gentle, preferably transparent coating that can be applied to this material (mostly melamine-coated particle board) to protect the wood from these minor damages without affecting the appearance. Ideally, it would be something non-toxic in case my pet licks it with their paw. Does anyone have experience with this or can recommend a specific solution? Thanks in advance!

Your issue is understandable and actually affects some people who have shelves with melamine-coated surfaces. Most conventional sealants are not well suited because they either make the surface look unattractive or do not adhere properly. I recommend applying a very thin layer of a special acrylic varnish designed for furniture surfaces, which remains almost transparent. Make sure the varnish is certified and non-toxic for surfaces that come into contact with animals. Alternatively, a sufficiently thin, transparent protective film for furniture could be used, which is quite flexible and cushions minor pressure marks.

I can recommend trying clear furniture protection films, which are available, for example, for car paint or at hardware stores. They are transparent, protect against scratches and pressure marks, and are safe for pets.

Another option would be a furniture polish or wax-based paste, which softens the material slightly. However, be careful if there is contact with a cat, as not every fabric is suitable for this.

An important factor when choosing protection is compatibility with the material of the Kallax shelf, which in your case is melamine-coated chipboard. Conventional paints barely penetrate and may peel off the smooth surface. One solution is special polyurethane coatings for furniture that can be applied very thinly and seal the surface without yellowing or becoming dull. When applying, it is essential to ensure complete drying and adequate ventilation to avoid toxic fumes. According to current product data sheets, some coatings are considered safe for direct contact with animals; thorough research is recommended, preferably with specialist dealers or paint manufacturers.

From my own experience, I can say that I used a combination of protective film and special furniture polish for similar issues with my cat. The film provides broad protection against pressure marks and scratches, while the polish additionally cares for the surface. Make sure to choose products that are solvent-free, especially when animals are nearby.
