Hello community, I am currently planning a customized design for my IKEA Platsa cabinet and wondered if there are specific paints, films, or other materials that can be used to individually and permanently customize the individual modules or fronts. I am thinking of some kind of wrapping or coating that adheres well to the smooth surfaces of Platsa components without damaging the furniture surface. Does anyone know of suitable product types or have special recommendations on how I can visually modify my Platsa furniture without having to buy completely new doors? I look forward to concrete tips and experiences regarding changing the appearance using paints or films for Platsa.

I find the idea of customizing Platsa with individually designed surfaces really exciting. I know some people here have already tried covering the carcasses with adhesive films and ran into issues with edges and corners. It’s important to be patient and, above all, to prepare the bonding surfaces thoroughly. When using paint, you also need time for drying and ideally apply several thin layers. I can easily understand that the whole project can feel like a bit of a challenge – but for me, it was truly enjoyable to personalize the cabinet this way.

Plus: No worries about brush marks; the films are really forgiving 😄.
That's true, and you can also experiment with a new look without permanently affecting the piece of furniture. Especially for seasonal color changes or when redecorating, film is my personal favorite.

I covered the fronts of my Platsa with thin-film foil that is applied directly. It is available in many colors and patterns, including matte options. You just need to work carefully and thoroughly clean the surface. Paints, on the other hand, provide a long-lasting result but are more labor-intensive to apply.

Paint is only necessary when the furniture surface is meant to be permanently altered. Films or wraps are more practical for moves, rental properties, or changing tastes. High-quality films are UV-resistant and waterproof.

For films, you should look for high-quality vinyl or PVC films specifically designed for furniture, as they are durable and washable.

Thanks, that helps me a lot already. Based on your experience, are there any particular suppliers or brands that work especially well for IKEA Platsa? How about durability after one or two years? I’d rather not have to redo it every year. Also, I’m curious about which colors work best – would matte tones or glossy finishes be better? And is it difficult to apply in unheated rooms during winter?
