Hello everyone,

I recently spilled coffee on my KALLAX unit. Now there are unpleasant brown stains on the surface, and I’m wondering what the best way is to remove them without damaging the material.

The KALLAX is made of MDF with a laminate finish, so I want to avoid causing further damage through moisture or incorrect cleaning products. Are there any proven home remedies or special cleaning products that effectively work without compromising the appearance?

Has anyone had experience with such stains on the KALLAX? I would appreciate any advice, preferably with guidance on the procedure and, if necessary, the amount of product to use.

Thanks in advance!

How old is the piece of furniture and does it have any surface damage?

The KALLAX is about 3 years old and did not have any significant scratches or damage before the coffee stain appeared. It has had normal use, no obvious dents or marks.

I will first try the dish soap method, possibly followed by isopropyl alcohol, but cautiously. I want to avoid polish to prevent uneven shiny spots from uneven re-polishing.

Thank you for the detailed explanation; it really helps me plan the next steps carefully.

Good morning,

I can add that especially with KALLAX units having a foil coating, you should never use chlorine-based cleaners or abrasive substances. These damage both the foil and the MDF board.

For stubborn stains, I recommend a special plastic cleaner that also provides care. You can find such products at specialist retailers or hardware stores – often labeled as "plastic care" or "furniture foil cleaner."

Drying is also critical: allow the surface to air dry and avoid heat exposure such as from a hairdryer, as this can cause the foil to peel or blister.

Hello everyone,

I would like to address the topic of KALLAX units and moisture again to clear up any misunderstandings.

The basic material, MDF, is sensitive to water and swells when it absorbs moisture. However, the KALLAX is coated on the outside with a thin foil that protects the actual wood.

Damage caused by liquids usually occurs at damaged spots in the foil or when water has penetrated so deeply that the foil peels off.

Therefore: stains caused by coffee are often superficial, and the main goal is to protect the foil. After initial cleaning attempts, the area should be monitored.

For heavy stains, it is possible to work carefully with a small amount of isopropanol, as recommended by @bapar, but never use more aggressive chemicals like acetone.

Additionally, I recommend wiping the treated surface dry with a soft cloth after cleaning to remove any remaining moisture, and if desired, applying a light coating of kitchen oil to mask small micro-scratches – this also makes the foil water-repellent and refreshes its appearance.

Brief and straightforward:

- Dab coffee immediately with a damp cloth
- Use rinse water, not wet, just slightly moist
- For stains, use diluted isopropanol
- No abrasive cleaners
- Always test in an inconspicuous area first
- Let dry after cleaning

That’s all it takes.
