ᐅ My KALLAX faded after being left in the garden heat – is using UV protective film advisable?

Hello everyone,

I have a small issue with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. I've been using it for some time in the garden, mainly on the patio, where it gets quite sunny and sometimes very hot – especially last summer with strong sunlight. I’ve noticed that the originally nice, bright white has gradually faded and become slightly yellowish.

Now I’m wondering if applying a UV protective film would help. Has anyone had experience with whether such a film is effective in preventing fading?

I understand that KALLAX is not really designed for outdoor use, but I would prefer not to have to bring it inside every time. Are there other ways to better protect the shelf from heat and UV radiation?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to give a quick update: I have now ordered a UV-resistant film that is specifically marketed for outdoor use and is supposed to be breathable. I thoroughly cleaned and dried the surface beforehand.

Additionally, I set up a sunshade on the terrace to slightly reduce direct sunlight.

Let’s see how long the film will last and whether the color of the KALLAX will remain more stable now. I will report back here if there is any interest. Thanks for the helpful tips so far!

Great that you’re approaching it this way! 🙂 I’m looking forward to your feedback. Sometimes it’s exactly these combinations of protective products that make the difference. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your KALLAX will hold up well over the next summers!

Brief update after one week: The membrane fits well, is hardly visible, and is very smooth. The sunshade really helps. The KALLAX still looks like new, no fading so far. It’s too early for a final assessment, but I’m hopeful! Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences.
