ᐅ My KALLAX rotates when I sit in the room – how can I secure it?

bob47Hello everyone,
I have a large IKEA KALLAX shelving unit in my living room that I use as a seating area when friends visit. The problem is that the KALLAX shifts or rotates slightly on the floor whenever someone sits on it. This makes sitting on it a bit unstable and, above all, annoying because it doesn’t stay securely in place.
I have already tried using non-slip pads underneath, but that only helped a little. Are there any ways to secure the shelving unit so that it no longer rotates or moves, but can still be moved relatively easily later on?
Maybe someone knows a good solution or trick, materials, or suitable fasteners that I can use effectively. I would appreciate tips that are not just temporary fixes but actually stabilize the unit without damaging my wall. Thanks in advance!

Hello bob47,
I’m happy to provide a brief guide on how to stabilize your KALLAX.
1. First, check that the floor is completely level. Uneven surfaces increase the chance of slipping.
2. Use self-adhesive anti-slip pads (available at hardware stores) and stick them under the corner feet of the shelving unit.
3. If that’s not enough, you can use metal brackets to fix the shelf to the wall. Make sure the brackets are installed in a way that allows the unit to be easily removed later.
4. Alternatively, some sellers offer small hook-and-loop straps or double-sided carpet tape that provide strong grip.
In summary: create a level floor, apply anti-slip materials, and use wall brackets if necessary.
Good luck!

Hello bob47,
I am very familiar with this issue, as I also use a KALLAX as a seating option. In my case, a combination of two measures helped:
First, I replaced the original plastic gliders with felt pads. These reduce friction while preventing the unit from rotating.
Second, I attached self-adhesive rubber stop pads to the back of the unit. These stick to the floor without leaving residue and significantly improve stability.
If you don’t want to fix the unit to the wall, I believe these rubber pads are the best solution. I would only recommend wall mounting if you intend to secure the unit permanently.

Hello bob47,
I think it’s great that you’re considering securing the shelf properly before anyone gets hurt. I had a similar issue once, and in the end, I solved it by securing the KALLAX with non-slip mats and also placing some heavy books inside to increase the weight at the base.
Since then, the shelf has been much more stable, and I feel more comfortable when people sit on it. I admit it’s not the most attractive solution, but safety comes first. Good luck with trying it out! 🙂
