ᐅ Lost screws for Kallax – where to buy replacements?

Hello everyone,

I recently tried to finish assembling my IKEA Kallax shelf, but unfortunately, some screws that were originally included in the package are missing.

Specifically, I am looking for the small cross-head screws used to connect the individual shelves and side panels. Since it has become difficult to get the exact replacement screws from IKEA itself (I have already checked there), I wanted to ask if anyone knows a reliable source where I can find screws that fit a Kallax shelf exactly?

It is especially important for me to have the correct length, thread, and screw type (cross-head, no Torx or similar).

Maybe you also have tips on what to pay attention to when buying the screws yourself somewhere else? It would also be helpful if you could share different sources from experience – whether hardware stores, online retailers, or specialist suppliers.

Thanks in advance for your support!

For reference:

The Kallax screws are standard chipboard screws with a Phillips head. Their typical dimensions are 3.5 mm diameter and 16 mm length (5/32 inch diameter and 5/8 inch length).

When purchasing replacements, please consider the following:
- Material: zinc or stainless steel, zinc-plated for corrosion protection
- Thread: full thread for wood/chipboard
- Head: flat, countersunk Phillips head

There is a wider selection available online, for example on Amazon, eBay, or specialized hardware suppliers.

Hardware stores such as OBI, Hornbach, or Bauhaus usually carry suitable screws, but it is advisable to compare them carefully with the original screws.

Recommendation: Take one screw from the original set for comparison when selecting replacements at the store.

Without the original size, fit issues may arise, or stability could be compromised.

I would recommend reviewing the assembly instructions again before making a purchase. They often include the exact specifications of the screws, sometimes even with order numbers.

IKEA frequently offers spare parts on their website, or you can inquire by phone.

If you buy the screws elsewhere, be sure to check the thread pitch and suitable wood thread type to avoid damaging the shelf.

I have often found replacements on Amazon using keywords like "IKEA furniture screws 3.5 x 16mm (0.14 x 0.63 inches)."

Specification sheet for the Kallax screw:

- Screw type: Chipboard screw
- Diameter: 3.5 mm (0.14 inches)
- Length: 16 mm (0.63 inches)
- Head: Flat head, cross recess (Phillips)
- Material: Zinc-plated steel

High-quality alternatives with similar specifications are offered by manufacturers such as SPAX or Wolfcraft and are available at hardware stores.

For replacement parts, the exact dimensions are crucial. A screw that is too short will not provide sufficient grip, while one that is too long can damage the material.

If you want to be on the safe side: IKEA spare parts can often be requested by phone or through customer service. They usually deliver such items without any hassle.

I called IKEA directly. They sent me replacement parts free of charge

That’s a good idea, as IKEA usually provides replacement parts for most furniture items as a goodwill gesture. Especially if screws are missing, I would always try that first, even if it sometimes takes a bit of waiting time.

If you decide to get replacements from a hardware store, make sure the screws are really suitable for particleboard – using the wrong thread can damage the shelving unit.

Exactly like that. Take the measurements with you to the hardware store, and it will work out.
