Hello everyone, I have the following issue: My Kallax shelf from Ikea keeps developing new visible streaks whenever it is exposed to direct sunlight. It almost looks like the wood or the surface is discoloring or fading unevenly due to the sunlight. The rooms where I use the shelf have relatively large windows, so depending on the position, the sun shines directly on it in the morning and afternoon. Does anyone have tips on how to prevent these streaks or know exactly what causes them? I have considered repositioning or treating it differently but would prefer minimal effort and no visible protective films. Thanks for your insights!

I just wonder if such a paint would adhere to melamine resinGood question, since melamine resin is known to be difficult to work with because of its very smooth surface. This means that without proper priming or sanding, adhesion is usually poor.
If no additional treatment is planned, protection against UV exposure would probably be more effective. Another point: the stripe pattern might also be caused by different light refraction on the surface. What exactly does the panel look like? Is it matte, glossy, or slightly textured? If textured, shadows cast by window frames or objects in front of the shelf could be responsible.
To mitigate the issue, I recommend the following approach: First, determine the exact direction and timing of sunlight exposure. Then, installing UV-filter films on the windows is a proven method, as they effectively protect the wood from fading without noticeably darkening the room.
If the surface is still damaged, restoring the gloss of melamine resin is difficult without completely replacing the veneer. Sealing is challenging due to the smooth surface. Therefore, the best protection is usually to avoid exposing the shelf to direct sunlight on a permanent basis.

Just briefly: If the streaks appear again, you can gently wipe them off with a damp cloth if they are caused by dirt or dust efflorescence. Otherwise, reposition or drape the shelf differently right away, as the shelf will then reflect UV radiation and its appearance will change.

My Kallax shelf from Ikea keeps developing visible streaks whenever it gets direct sunlightThis sounds like damage caused by light exposure, as mentioned before. If the finish appears to be affected, the only solution is shading or UV protection.
I would also recommend checking for sturdy furniture protectors, in case sunlight shines through window gaps and hits the wood in a concentrated way. The streaks could be related to the window frame or grille pattern.
