ᐅ Transporting KALLAX in a Small Car – How to Secure It?

Good morning everyone!

I am planning to transport an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit in my small car soon. The dimensions (77x147x39 cm) (30x58x15 inches) are quite large, and I am concerned about how to secure the shelving safely in the car to prevent it from shifting or causing damage during braking or cornering.

My question is: What methods or tools are best suited to securely fix a KALLAX shelving unit when transporting it in a small car?

I am thinking about using tie-down straps, blankets, padding, or perhaps a combination of these, but I lack experience with practically securing larger furniture in small vehicles.

I would appreciate tips on the best approach, potential pitfalls, or any advice regarding legal requirements for transport. Thank you in advance!

I understand that it can seem intimidating at first, especially if you have a small car. If you're unsure, I would recommend asking someone to help you with loading – sometimes you don’t really see all the possibilities inside the car yourself.

And don’t worry, with a few straps and some patience, the transport usually works out much better than you expect. 🙂

Two tension straps, preferably ratchet straps, use fixed anchor points, cushion with blankets. Better to disassemble the shelf.

Also make sure that the shelf does not obstruct the view

That’s an important point, thank you! I was planning to lay the shelf across the back seat, but if that completely blocks the rear view, I should probably reconsider.

What about legal requirements? Do I need to attach a warning device, such as a warning board, if the shelf extends beyond the tailgate? My KALLAX is close to the limit line, but it might protrude slightly in the end.

I’d appreciate any additional advice.

Oh yes, visibility is really important – nothing is more annoying than a load blocking your rearview mirror. 😊

Do I actually need to attach a warning device if the shelf extends beyond the tailgate?

Short answer: Yes, if the load extends beyond the vehicle, traffic regulations require you to mark it with a warning device (e.g., a red flag or warning sign), especially during the day. After dark, additional lighting or reflective elements are mandatory.

My advice: Try not to let it stick out too far; that way, you’re on the safe side and the neighboring storage space will appreciate it too. 🙂 Good luck with the transport!
