Good morning everyone!
I am planning to transport an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit in my small car soon. The dimensions (77x147x39 cm) (30x58x15 inches) are quite large, and I am concerned about how to secure the shelving safely in the car to prevent it from shifting or causing damage during braking or cornering.
My question is: What methods or tools are best suited to securely fix a KALLAX shelving unit when transporting it in a small car?
I am thinking about using tie-down straps, blankets, padding, or perhaps a combination of these, but I lack experience with practically securing larger furniture in small vehicles.
I would appreciate tips on the best approach, potential pitfalls, or any advice regarding legal requirements for transport. Thank you in advance!

Hello Joguto,
Basically, it is important to secure the KALLAX shelf so that it cannot shift or tip over during sudden braking, as this is dangerous and could also damage the interior.
I recommend the following procedure:
1. Completely disassemble the shelf if possible – this reduces volume and weight as well as the risk of tipping.
2. If disassembly is not an option, wrap the shelf in a blanket or moving film to prevent scratches.
3. Use at least two sturdy straps. Secure the shelf so that it is held at multiple points – ideally attached to anchor points in the trunk or other solid fixing locations.
4. Fill empty gaps with padded blankets or bubble wrap to minimize movement.
5. Check the stability before starting the trip.
Also, keep in mind that ignoring these precautions can lead to serious hazards, and legal regulations require that cargo must be properly secured.
Good luck!

Hey Joguto,
exciting project! 😊 A KALLAX just barely fits into a small car if you get a bit creative. My secret weapon is ratchet straps plus plenty of wool blankets.
I usually place the shelf on the back seat and then surround it with blankets so nothing gets scratched. Then I secure it with at least two straps attached to the headrests or other anchor points.
A little tip: put some non-slip material under the shelf – some anti-slip rubber really makes a difference. And if you have to brake suddenly, everything stays in place.
Not completely waterproof, but super practical for home use 🙂 Good luck handling it! 😉

I think the complexity of this topic is somewhat overestimated. A KALLAX is not a camping barrel. If you follow the common rule that cargo must be secured so it doesn’t shift, using just ratchet straps will get you quite far.
Exactly that – two straps and that’s enough. If we overdo it with blankets and other extras, the securing becomes more confusing.
Also: if the shelf doesn’t fit securely into a small car or can’t be fixed tightly, then it’s the wrong vehicle for the load – period.
My advice: If you need to transport such large furniture, either disassemble it or rent something bigger.

As an addition and a brief guide for secure fixing:
1. Measurement: Before transport, measure the interior dimensions of your small car and compare them with the dimensions of the KALLAX.
2. Disassembly: Separating the shelving unit increases stability and safety in the trunk, preventing the risk of tipping.
3. Identify securing points: Not all small cars have sturdy anchor points in the trunk – if not, improvised solutions using suitable hooks or wooden slats are necessary.
4. Tie-down straps: Preferably with ratchet functions, as they provide adjustable tension and do not loosen.
5. Padding: Place foam, blankets, or padding boards between the shelving unit and the vehicle body to avoid scratches and pressure marks.
6. Positioning: If possible, transport the shelving unit lying down, as it will be exposed to less wind and vibrations.
7. Load securing: Check regularly during the trip to ensure that the tie-downs remain tight.
Also, make sure that the shelving unit does not obstruct the view and does not interfere with passenger seat belts.
In summary, disassembling the shelving unit significantly simplifies transport.
