Hello everyone,
I recently bought and assembled a Kallax cabinet from IKEA. Unfortunately, after moving in and just a few days of use, I noticed that the side panels have swollen noticeably. The surface is bulging outward at the edges, which suggests moisture damage—even though the cabinet is placed in a well-heated and dry room. My question is: What is the typical warranty or claim period at IKEA for issues like this that might be caused by material defects or manufacturing faults? Has anyone had experience with whether swollen material like this is still covered under warranty, even if the damage only becomes visible several weeks after purchase? I would prefer not to exceed any valid claim periods, but keeping the cabinet in this condition is not an option. Thanks for your help!

IKEA usually offers a 365-day return policy, but this period can be longer in case of material or manufacturing defects. You should submit a claim as soon as possible and document the defects.

Hello mukureo,

From my experience with IKEA, the manufacturer’s warranty for furniture is generally two years. This means that defects caused by material or production faults can be claimed within this period. It is always important to report the issue as soon as possible and keep the purchase receipt if you can. In cases of swelling materials, especially related to moisture damage, they often check the conditions in which the furniture was kept. Since you have only had the cabinet for a short time and set it up properly, your chances are good.

When you report the issue, describe the condition as accurately as possible and ask about the next steps. Fingers crossed that there won’t be any problems!

Hello everyone,

I would like to briefly explain the warranty period and common issues with the Kallax cabinet.

1. Warranty period: In Germany, the standard legal warranty period is 2 years, during which IKEA is liable for material and manufacturing defects. Some IKEA furniture pieces also come with additional warranties, which you can check on IKEA’s website.

2. Causes of swelling: Kallax is made of particleboard, which can swell if exposed to moisture. This may be due to improper storage before assembly or transportation without climate control.

3. Immediate actions: You should avoid exposing the furniture to any further moisture, even if you believe the room is dry. It is important to prove that the damage is due to the product itself and not caused by user error.

4. Documentation: Take notes, for example, when the damage first became visible, and keep all receipts.

Summary: Use IKEA’s claims process within the two-year period and describe the defect precisely. If your Kallax has swollen after 1–3 weeks, it is likely a production or storage defect.

Hello mukureo,

I would like to go into more detail on this topic, as there are several technical and legal aspects to consider with furniture like the Kallax.

First, regarding the material: The Kallax is made from particleboard coated with melamine resin. This coating offers some protection against moisture but is not completely waterproof. Even under normal indoor climate conditions, small amounts of moisture can penetrate the edges, especially if the panel has been mechanically damaged or improperly handled.

About the complaint period:

1. In Germany, there is a legal warranty period of 2 years for new goods. Within this time, you are entitled to claim defects in the product.

2. IKEA also often offers a manufacturer’s warranty that can extend beyond the 2 years, but with limited conditions. For the Kallax, I know IKEA can provide a standard 5-year warranty, which you should check on their website or your receipt.

3. Important: The claim must be made within a reasonable time after discovering the defect, usually within 2 weeks of it becoming apparent, in order not to lose your rights.

Can you confirm that there were no visible scratches or other damage at the edges before the swelling occurred? Was the cabinet placed against an external wall where condensation might occur?

My advice:

- Contact IKEA customer service as soon as possible by phone or in writing, including photos and descriptions
- Refer to the legal warranty and any extended manufacturer’s warranty
- Have your proof of purchase ready

Unfortunately, such damage is not uncommon when particleboard is exposed to moisture over a longer period, but swelling that occurs within just a few days under normal use and storage should be covered by the warranty.

One more question: Did you buy the cabinet directly in-store or online? Different deadlines for reporting defects can apply to online purchases from the date of receipt.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the detailed responses so far.

@PLOMA: I can absolutely rule out that the edges of the Kallax were damaged before the swelling occurred. The cabinet is located in my living room, far from exterior walls and radiators, and the indoor climate is consistently dry (around 21°C (70°F) and 40% humidity). I purchased the cabinet at the local IKEA store, not online.

I will contact customer service this evening to explain the situation. If that doesn’t help, would the next step be to visit the IKEA store in person?

Since I’m now a bit more informed, I also looked into the manufacturer’s warranty. According to IKEA’s website, there is indeed a 5-year warranty for Kallax, but it also states the product must have been properly maintained. I wonder how swelling caused by an obvious material defect is evaluated.
