Hello everyone,

I recently noticed that two side panels of my IKEA KALLAX shelf have slightly warped along the edges. The issue appeared shortly after minor water exposure – a water mark, which looks like a stain, is still visible. The surface hasn’t swollen extensively, but the deformation is clearly noticeable and annoying.

I’m particularly interested in how much wood veneer or particleboard can permanently change from such small amounts of water. Are there any effective home remedies or professional methods to remove or at least reduce the warping? And should I replace the affected side panels or try to salvage them?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations.

Such warping in KALLAX side panels is usually caused by the swelling of wood-based materials due to moisture. KALLAX mainly uses particleboard coated with melamine resin, which is somewhat moisture resistant but can swell when exposed directly to water.

Home remedies, such as drying with a hairdryer on low heat, can temporarily help reduce moisture. However, permanent reversal of the warping is rare because water absorption causes structural changes in the particleboard. Replacement is generally the cleanest solution, especially if stability or appearance is significantly affected.

Hello Charly53,

It’s good that you described the problem in detail because the type of moisture exposure is crucial. With melamine-coated particle boards, as KAULIS mentioned, moisture usually penetrates at the edges since the coating is most vulnerable there.

The best approach is to keep the shelf in a warm, dry place without direct sunlight. A fan can help the area dry more quickly.

Regarding repair: If the surface hasn’t chipped or cracked, it might be possible to reduce the warping by gently weighting it down and applying controlled heat, for example, by placing a heavier wooden board on top and using an iron wrapped in a cloth on the lowest setting. However, be careful, as this could potentially damage the material further.

So consider how important the appearance is to you and whether it’s worth experimenting.

Water stains on KALLAX are usually damage to the particleboard.

Drying only helps superficially. Warping usually remains.

Replacement is the best and safest solution.

A brief addition: To prevent further damage, you should avoid wetting or allowing the side panels to become wet any further.

If a repair is attempted, work only with low heat and completely dry materials.

Hello Charly53,

I experienced a similar situation and would like to share my experience: In my case, slight swelling due to water unfortunately caused a permanent warping. Attempts to fix it with a hairdryer and weighting it down didn’t help much, as the moisture had penetrated deep into the wood.

I would also recommend replacing the side molding, especially if these are load-bearing parts. If you want to try a repair, you can carefully use wood glue to stabilize any swollen areas, but this is only a trial.

Feel free to share how you decide!
