ᐅ KALLAX Side Panels Bowing Due to Water Stain – Need Advice?

Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that two side panels of my IKEA KALLAX shelf have slightly warped along the edges. The issue appeared shortly after minor water exposure – a water mark, which looks like a stain, is still visible. The surface hasn’t swollen extensively, but the deformation is clearly noticeable and annoying.
I’m particularly interested in how much wood veneer or particleboard can permanently change from such small amounts of water. Are there any effective home remedies or professional methods to remove or at least reduce the warping? And should I replace the affected side panels or try to salvage them?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations.

Warping caused by moisture in particle boards is a well-known issue, especially on edges that are not fully sealed.
As an alternative to complete replacement, you can try applying light pressure under a weight combined with gentle heat treatment to drive out the moisture. However, this effect is usually temporary.
In my opinion, a lasting solution generally requires replacing the affected side panels. As a precaution, it should be noted that moisture must be avoided on the KALLAX shelf, as the material is not water-resistant.

light pressing under weight and heat treatmentThis is the only simple approach I can recommend. However, extreme care is required to avoid damaging the melamine coating. Using heat from an iron with a damp cloth in between can help to dry the particleboard and hopefully achieve some degree of reshaping.
That said, one should not expect a permanent fix. Structural damage to the particleboard often remains.

I will try the method with gentle heat and adding weight, but very carefully, as the melamine coating is important to me. If it doesn’t work, I’d rather replace the side panels before any damage gets worse.
I find it interesting to learn that the particleboard edges in KALLAX have such weak points. In your opinion, is this a general material issue or rather an isolated case due to moisture exposure? Are there generally better comparable systems available?
