Hello everyone,

I have a specific question: What are your experiences with the combination of shoes and dirt on the IKEA KALLAX shelves? Specifically, I am interested in how durable the surface is against dirt, for example from street shoes, and whether the dirt can be easily removed without leaving scratches or unsightly marks. I would also like to know if there are any differences depending on the type of shoes used (sneakers, leather shoes, brogues, etc.) and if you might have tips on how to best protect or clean the KALLAX shelving system when such dirt occurs. Thank you in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

I feel the same way as Christia59. Just never place shoes with mud directly on the KALLAX. If it happens, clean it quickly; otherwise, you’ll risk stains or scratches.

I have had good experiences with designated shoe storage areas. There, I protect the KALLAX from dirt and moisture. Additionally, it makes cleaning much easier.

Do you mainly use your KALLAX as a shoe rack, or do shoes only occasionally sit there?
I mostly use it as a shelf, but sometimes shoes are placed there as well. Unfortunately, there are occasionally cold transition days when shoes bring dirt in quickly, which is why I’m concerned.

Regarding stains from moisture: How long can moisture remain on a KALLAX surface at most before action should be taken?

I’m also interested if anyone can recommend special cleaners or home remedies that gently remove stains and dirt.

Good question, Matiaslau!

Basically, I don’t recommend leaving a wet spot untreated for more than 10-15 minutes, as liquids can seep into the edges or joints. This can cause swelling or discoloration, especially with KALLAX made of particleboard.

Regarding cleaners: Gentle all-purpose cleaners with a neutral pH are ideal. Dish soap mixed with water also works well. It’s best to avoid harsh chemical cleaners (e.g., those containing ammonia or strong bleaching agents). For stubborn stains, microfiber cloths and light soaking are recommended, followed by wiping with a damp cloth and drying thoroughly.

Home remedies like vinegar water should be used very cautiously, as they can damage the surface.

10 minutes is a good guideline.

Damp cloth with a mild cleaner, done.

That's right, better to wipe quickly. Shoes with treads often collect more dirt, so clean carefully.
