Hello everyone,

I recently moved and tried to reassemble my IKEA Kallax shelf. I noticed that the screws I wanted to use for the reassembly are obviously too short and don’t hold properly anymore. This surprised me a bit, as I intended to use the same screws I used during the initial assembly. Now my question to the community: Is there a way to get suitable replacement screws for the Kallax shelf, and if so, where would you recommend finding ones that fit the drill holes and load requirements of the shelf? Maybe someone has experience with purchasing spare parts for IKEA furniture after a move. I appreciate any advice!

In most cases, it is recommended to first contact IKEA customer service, as IKEA often sells spare parts individually. The screws for the Kallax are standardized and are often available in special sets or as replacement part packages. Alternatively, specialty stores for woodworking and furniture fittings are a good option, where you can find screws with the exact length and thread type needed. It is important to know the original dimensions—diameter, length, and head type—as precisely as possible.

So I would first get in touch with IKEA support, and if they cannot provide suitable screws, look for screws with the corresponding measurements at a specialty store or online. Screws that are too short can significantly reduce the stability, so it’s better to be cautious.

To add to Giagau’s input: IKEA offers replacement parts through their online store or in their retail locations, but availability varies depending on the product. Kallax shelves typically use standardized fittings and screws, usually metric M6 or M8 with specific lengths.

A practical solution is to order the screws from a specialist hardware store for wood fittings. You should provide exact specifications for the length (often about 30-40 mm (1¼-1⅝ inches) for Kallax) and the screw head type (e.g., countersunk or round head), since the fit is important for the “insert shelves.”

Alternatively, you can also use online platforms like eBay or Amazon where there are sets specifically for IKEA furniture. These are often more affordable and immediately available. It is important that the material is of good quality—stainless steel is more durable.

If the shelf was slightly damaged during a move, you should also check whether the drill holes are still intact, as this can affect the fit as well.

I completely agree! Shelves can take a bit of a beating during a move, so it definitely makes sense to use good replacement parts to keep the piece stable over time.

I once replaced some screws on a Kallax after moving with a few from a hardware store. They weren’t IKEA originals but had exactly the same dimensions. It worked perfectly and has held up for years.

If anyone’s looking for a quick supply of replacements: spare screws for Kallax are often available at IKEA itself in the store under “spare parts” at the service desk, sometimes even free of charge. Just ask! Otherwise, as mentioned, hardware stores or online retailers with the exact measurements are good options.

A small tip: don’t use too much force when unscrewing, or the hole may become deformed – then even the best screw won’t help 😉 :-)

Good luck with your repair!
