ᐅ Loss of Structural Stability in KALLAX After Water Leak – Is It Salvageable?

Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit that was damaged by a water leak. Water collected in the shelves for several hours, which apparently has significantly affected its stability. The shelves now appear swollen, and the entire piece of furniture no longer stands securely.

My question is: Are there ways to restore a KALLAX shelving unit to a stable condition after such water damage? Or is the material so vulnerable that saving it is unlikely?

I would like to know which methods or products have proven effective for drying or repairing swollen boards, and whether reassembling or reinforcing it makes sense.

Thanks for your advice!

Disassemble and dry completely.

Renew the edge coating (edge banding or paint).

Replace warped boards.

Otherwise, the shelf will lose stability.

An additional option that is often overlooked is reinforcing the inner sides of the compartments with metal brackets or thin wooden strips. Once dried, this can at least partially compensate for the reduced stability.

However, make sure to place screws and dowels only where the material is still intact, as swollen particleboard often becomes brittle.

After water damage, the shelf will never be like new again, but measures like these can help extend its usable life.

Hello, I’d like to add that timing is crucial. The faster you take action by disassembling the shelf and thoroughly drying the individual parts, the better the chances of saving it.

After 24 to 48 hours of heavy moisture exposure, the damage is often irreversible because the material permanently swells and the particleboard fibers start to fall apart.

Therefore: act quickly, store the parts in a dry place, handle them carefully, and follow the construction-related advice shared in this thread.

Relatively simple procedure:

1. Disassemble and dry completely.
2. Sand damaged areas, if possible.
3. Apply edge protection or clear varnish.
4. Reinforce with brackets if necessary.

Otherwise, the effort is not worthwhile.
