ᐅ Refreshing the Color of a BILLY Shelf: How to Paint It Properly?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a BILLY shelf from IKEA and would like to repaint it in a different color. Since the shelf is made of particleboard with a foil coating, I am unsure about the best way to paint it so that the paint adheres well and the surface looks smooth and even.

My questions are:

1. How should I best prepare the BILLY shelf – is sanding enough, or do I need to remove the foil?
2. Which type of paint works best for this material (e.g., acrylic, alkyd, spray paint)?
3. Should I use a primer before painting, and if so, which one?
4. What should I keep in mind when applying the paint (number of coats, drying times, temperature conditions)?

I would really appreciate detailed guidance or any experiences with painting a BILLY shelf. Thank you in advance!

Good morning,

just a quick update from my side: Two days ago, I sprayed the primer onto my Billy shelf and then applied the first coat of white paint right afterward. The paint goes on really well in thin layers and already looks significantly better than before.

At first, I was also worried that the laminate might peel off or that the paint would chip. So far, everything is holding up great, but I will still do a light sanding with 400-grit sandpaper before applying the second coat.

If anyone else has similar concerns, I can say that proper preparation is truly the key! 🙂

Very good! Thin layers are essential for a perfect finish.

@parelijah I hope the information from everyone helps you and that you can soon make the shelf shine in white. If you have any questions about choosing the right product, just let me know.

One more tip: The ambient temperature should ideally be between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius (64 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit), and the humidity preferably low, otherwise the drying time will increase significantly.

Thanks to everyone who helped me in such detail!

Yesterday, I started with the cleaning and fine sanding. Today, I will buy the primer and see how to apply the first coat of paint.

@Domau0 Thanks for asking, matte white is definitely still my preference, as it also looks very timeless.

I’ll be happy to get back to you with questions or an update as the project progresses! 🙂
