Hello everyone,
Before winter, I stored an IKEA Kallax shelf on our unheated attic. Now that winter is over, I unfortunately noticed that the shelf has warped in several places. The individual shelves are no longer straight, the joints are loosening, and overall it looks like moisture and temperature fluctuations have taken quite a toll on the wood.
My question is: How winterproof or suitable is the material of the Kallax shelf in general for damp and cold storage areas like an attic? Are there any tips on how to store such a shelf properly to prevent warping and damage caused by moisture?
Perhaps some of you have had similar experiences or even solutions. Looking forward to your opinions!

My attic cools down to around 5°C (41°F) at night and rises to 20°C (68°F) or more during the day. Is that critical?Hi, I can understand that this is annoying. Temperature fluctuations of 15°C (27°F) are not ideal, but they are not the main issue.
What’s especially important is the humidity. If that varies a lot as well, the wooden boards often expand and contract. This happens quickly with particleboard, like those used in Kallax furniture, and can lead to warping.
Do you have a way to measure the humidity with a hygrometer throughout the day? That often gives a good indication of how problematic it might be for the furniture.
Hey Vinfu, don’t get discouraged! 🙂
I had a similar issue once with a Kallax shelf in my basement, and what helped me was a simple, inexpensive electric dehumidifier.
The device reduced the moisture in the air, and with a little care (regular ventilation and occasional checks), the furniture quickly became more stable again.
Maybe you can place the shelf in a corner where you can at least do something like this? That’s often the best approach before planning costly repairs or replacements. Good luck!
