ᐅ Kallax dull after deep cleaning – how to restore its shine?

karken65Hello everyone,
I recently gave my Kallax shelf a thorough deep cleaning because it had become quite dusty and stained after years of use. I carefully removed all deposits using a mild cleaning agent. However, I noticed that the surface has become significantly duller than before and no longer has its original nice shine.
For clarity: This is a Kallax with melamine-coated surfaces, not a real wood finish.
My question: Is there a way to restore these surfaces after such a deep cleaning to make them shiny and refreshed like they originally were? I want to avoid damaging the surface or making things worse with unsuitable products.
What experiences or recommendations do you have, perhaps specific care products or techniques? Thank you in advance!

Hello karken65,
I can understand your description well. Melamine-coated Kallax units are indeed sensitive when it comes to surface texture, and after intensive cleaning, the protective layer can easily appear dull.
A few tips:
- Avoid aggressive abrasives or rough sponges that can microscopically roughen the surface and scatter light.
- To refresh the surface, use a special plastic care product that nourishes the melamine without leaving a film. Silicone-based products are often suitable here. Alternatively, you can use a very small amount of plastic furniture polish spray.
- Before applying, make sure to wipe the surface thoroughly dry and dust-free to avoid trapping particles.
- After application, it’s best to polish with a microfiber cloth using circular motions.
One question: Which cleaning agents exactly did you use, and how did you dry the shelf? Some cleaners leave residues that could explain the dull result.
In general: Melamine is durable, but it stays glossy only if the surface is sealed and not excessively worn.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing agents or rough sponges that can microscopically damage the surfaceI completely agree, but I would like to point out that a dull appearance is not always a sign of surface damage. Sometimes it is simply due to neutralized or curing cleaning residues that create a fine film.

No waxes, they tend to become sticky.I would question this blanket rejection of waxes. There are specific furniture waxes formulated for plastic surfaces that can temporarily enhance gloss without leaving a sticky residue. However, compatibility should be carefully tested.
My advice: after thorough cleaning, rinse well with clear water, let it dry properly, and then test a plastic care product on a small, inconspicuous area before treating the entire shelf.
Thank you very much for the initial suggestions!
@reybo: I used a mild all-purpose cleaner, diluted with some water, and then cleaned the surfaces with a sponge. After that, I wiped them down with a clean, damp cloth and dried them with a dry rag. No abrasive cleaners or anything else. However, the surfaces felt a bit rougher afterward than before, and when viewed from different angles in the light, the previously even gloss is gone.
@dachen: The comment about residue sounds plausible. I didn’t specifically rinse several times with clear water, but only cleaned twice in total. I’m not sure if that may have increased the effect.
I’m afraid that cleaning has at least partially removed the “protective film.”

Hello karken65,
I’m familiar with these situations and happy to help. With melamine-coated surfaces, such as those commonly found on Kallax units, the cleaning method you use is very important.
From my experience:
- Always use pH-neutral cleaners whenever possible, since aggressive or alkaline cleaners can damage the surface.
- After cleaning, be sure to wipe multiple times with clean, warm water to remove all residues. This helps reduce any hazy effect.
- To restore shine, I recommend a care oil or spray designed specifically for plastic surfaces. These products leave a very thin film on the surface, slightly filling in micro-scratches and significantly enhancing gloss without leaving a sticky residue.
- Afterwards, polish the surfaces using a soft cotton cloth or microfiber cloth in circular motions.
- To be safe, test the product first in a less visible area.
If you want, I can share some product names that I personally find effective.
