ᐅ My KALLAX always feels slightly sticky, even after cleaning—is this something you’ve experienced too?

mentormeHello everyone, I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where my KALLAX shelf from IKEA remains slightly sticky despite regular cleaning. I use common cleaning products such as all-purpose cleaner or even some dish soap with water, but the surface never feels completely clean and still sticks a little. Does anyone have experience with this phenomenon? Could it be due to the material properties, or are there any specific tips on how to permanently remove this unpleasant stickiness? I would appreciate helpful advice and a detailed explanation of what might be causing this from a technical or chemical perspective.
The KALLAX is typically made of veneered chipboard with a melamine resin-coated surface. While this surface is quite durable, it can feel sticky due to residues from cleaning agents or environmental factors. It is important to ensure that no residues remain on the surface after cleaning. I recommend first cleaning the area with a mild detergent and then thoroughly wiping it down with clean water to remove any leftovers. If the stickiness persists, it could be caused by a damaged or low-quality lacquer film that has changed over time. In this case, wiping the surface with a low concentration of isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) may help to dissolve fats and polymer residues.
That sounds really frustrating when you put in the effort to clean and it still remains sticky. Something similar has happened to me, and I found out that the area was often affected by grease from the kitchen. Maybe consider if the shelf is located close to a spot where cooking fumes reach it? That can cause such a sticky residue to develop faster. Totally understand how annoying that is! 🙂
It almost feels like being a detective when searching for the cause! 🙂 In my opinion, residues from plasticizers in plastic or adhesive residues from the packaging could also cause such a sticky layer to form. Maybe take a close look at the shelf to see if any material is coming off somewhere? Oh, and don’t forget: sometimes cleaning the surface with a microfiber cloth and a bit of alcohol helps. Not too harsh, though, or the material might become dull.
