stefanpuHello everyone,
I have a small problem with my white KALLAX shelf from IKEA: Unfortunately, there are some marker and pen stains on the surface. Since I don’t want to damage the shelf, I’m looking for effective and gentle methods to remove these stains without leaving any marks or discoloration. Has anyone had experience removing pen stains from white, smooth surfaces like the KALLAX, ideally using specific products or home remedies that have proven to be particularly effective? I appreciate any tips that really work and minimize potential risks. Thanks in advance!

Hello Stefan,
I understand your concern about the white KALLAX well. The surface is melamine-coated, which generally helps resist stains, but markers can still soak in. For cleaning, a window cleaner with a slight alcohol content can be suitable, but test it first on an inconspicuous spot. Magic Eraser (melamine sponge) is also often recommended – however, be careful as it can damage the surface, so use it gently.
If you have felt-tip marker stains, try mild detergents like dish soap in lukewarm water first. Ballpoint pen ink on the surface can sometimes be removed with a cloth and nail polish remover (without acetone!) – be sure to test this! It’s important to wipe the area thoroughly and dry it afterwards.
Maybe you could share what type of markers are on it exactly? Then I can offer more specific advice.

Therefore, I would suggest spot treatment with isopropanol instead and accept multiple applications. It also depends heavily on the type of marker, whether it is ink-based or waxy.
@stefanpu: Have you already tested if the markers are waterproof? That is very important when choosing the right cleaner.
My experience with white, melamine-coated surfaces is that using alcohol as an initial treatment is helpful but only removes light stains.
For stubborn stains, I recommend gently scrubbing with a sponge and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. >>
Important: Never use harsh solvents or homemade remedies like toothpaste, as they can cause small scratches.
Overly aggressive cleaning can leave white spots dull and noticeable. It’s best to always start by testing on an inconspicuous area.
How severe are the stains? Are they just on the surface or deeply embedded?

Thank you for the helpful suggestions!
Regarding the stains: They are mainly felt-tip pen marks with a few from blue ballpoint pen. The stains are on the surface, and I believe they are superficial, as you can also see some slight wear where they are starting to come off. I tried wiping with a damp cloth and some dish soap, but unfortunately without success.
Therefore, I was thinking about the mentioned alcohol-based cleaning agents. I will carefully test isopropanol first.
So far, I haven’t tried any stronger agents—nail polish remover sounds risky due to the acetone, as you pointed out, Josan.
PS: The shelf has a white matte finish, not high-gloss.
