Hello everyone,

I have a small problem with my white KALLAX shelf from IKEA: Unfortunately, there are some marker and pen stains on the surface. Since I don’t want to damage the shelf, I’m looking for effective and gentle methods to remove these stains without leaving any marks or discoloration. Has anyone had experience removing pen stains from white, smooth surfaces like the KALLAX, ideally using specific products or home remedies that have proven to be particularly effective? I appreciate any tips that really work and minimize potential risks. Thanks in advance!

Hey Stefan,

I just remembered: there are these eraser-like cleaning sponges, for example the so-called "Magic Eraser" – of course, it can be risky, but with very light use and gentle pressure, I’ve often had success in similar cases.

Alternatively, a little toothbrush with dish soap rubbed in circular motions can help – it sounds simple, but sometimes you come up with strange ideas 🙂

Once you’ve decided, please give an update! I’m curious to hear how it goes.

Yeah, I love the Magic Eraser! 🙂 I've already removed pen marks twice from my KALLAX without leaving any residue. The key is to keep the sponge damp and really test it gently before scrubbing hard.

And very important: Don’t use too much pressure, or it will wear down the surface enough to reveal the color underneath.

Go ahead and let us know how it goes!

Hello Stefan,

I just want to briefly chime in because I tend to be very cautious in such cases.

My advice: avoid nail polish remover or strong solvents – they have too much potential to damage the coating. In my experience, gently rubbing with a cloth soaked in spirit (alcohol) is usually enough.

If that doesn’t work, try mild cleaning gasoline, which is often less aggressive than nail polish remover and evaporates quickly.

Good luck!

Very good, I wanted to emphasize that as well. Acetone in nail polish remover can damage the surface, which is often underestimated.

Furthermore, the white KALLAX cabinets are coated with melamine resin, which does not always react well to organic solvents. Maybe it’s safer to use a special plastic cleaner?

Has anyone tried something like this here?

Thank you for the tip about the organic solvents!

I will try using isopropanol in a hidden spot once more. If that doesn’t work, are there any specifically recommended plastic or melamine cleaners that are safe for this purpose? Products that can be easily found, for example, in hardware stores or drugstores?

I definitely want to avoid damaging the surface, as the shelving furniture is otherwise in very good condition.

I look forward to your recommendations.

For cleaning plastic or melamine surfaces, I recommend water-based products, such as Polytrol (for plastic surfaces), which is available at hardware stores in Germany.

These cleaners are gentler and remove light discolorations without damaging the surface.

If you decide to use a cleaner, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area.

If you are interested in such products, also pay attention to the ingredients — those truly free of solvents are usually better.

Good luck!
