ᐅ Kallax doors only close with strong pressure – how can I loosen them?

Hello everyone, I have the following problem with my IKEA Kallax shelves: The doors only close if I push them very hard. Normally, they should close gently or latch softly. I have no idea whether it’s due to the hinges, the door alignment, or if the soft-close mechanism might be defective. Is there a way to loosen or adjust the mechanism so the doors close more easily without requiring much force? I would appreciate any advice on how to approach this problem step by step, without having to buy new hinges right away. Thanks in advance!

Hello Tisofo,

I am familiar with this issue. Usually, adjusting the hinges combined with some maintenance of the moving parts helps with Kallax doors.

If you are not yet confident with the screws, here is a brief guide:
- Locate the three adjustment screws on each hinge.
- The front screw controls the depth, the rear screws adjust the height and lateral position.
- Make small turns to realign the door.
- Close the door periodically to test if it closes more easily.

Sometimes, spraying the hinges and eyelets with a dry silicone spray can also help. This reduces friction and makes closing smoother.

Stay patient while adjusting; it is often a small detail that makes the difference! 🙂

This is a very important point. Additionally, you should unscrew the hinges and check for any cracks or fractures in the plastic that could be causing excessive resistance. Faulty springs can also be the reason for high pressure when closing.

I once completely replaced the hinges on my Kallax shelf because over time, due to constant tension and wear, they simply stopped working properly. Installation is straightforward, and replacement parts are affordable.

If you feel confident, this could be a durable long-term solution. If not, careful readjustment is often enough.
