Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelves, specifically with the doors I added later. For some time now, some of the doors stick when opening or closing, which is quite annoying. The doors are not warped, and the hinges seem to be properly installed. Interestingly, the sticking is not equally strong on all doors; some still open easily, while others show noticeable resistance.

My question to you: What could be the cause of a KALLAX door sticking at all? Could it be due to material swelling from moisture, or is there a common misalignment with the hinges? I installed the doors exactly as described in the IKEA instructions, but apparently I overlooked something. Maybe someone here has experienced similar problems and can help me fix the sticking?

I’m looking forward to your tips and thank you in advance!

Hello KLOCHEN,

I am familiar with your issue; KALLAX doors often tend to stick, and this can have several causes. It is often due to misaligned hinges or screws that are not fully tightened. Even if the doors themselves do not appear warped, the material can expand slightly due to moisture, which can cause creaking or sticking.

A proven tip is to first inspect all the hinges and carefully adjust them using a screwdriver. Most KALLAX hinges have adjustment screws that allow you to align the doors horizontally and vertically. A small trick is to slightly loosen the mounting plate, position the door correctly, and then tighten everything again.

If that doesn’t help, it could be that the shelving unit itself is slightly uneven or has warped due to an uneven floor – this can be compensated for with small shims. Moisture in the room (for example from heating air or high humidity) can also play a role, especially if the doors are made of particleboard.

If you have more detailed information about the model variant or photos of the hinges, we can address the issue more specifically. Good luck for now!

Exactly, this allows you to quickly fix any binding. Simply adjust with a screwdriver until the door swings freely again.

Hello KLOCHEN,

I would like to provide some detailed advice on the cause and solution to your problem, as KALLAX doors sticking is a common issue and some standard mistakes are frequently made.

1. Screwing of the hinges: Often, the screws are not evenly positioned or not tightened enough. This causes a slight shift of the door within the frame.

2. Hinge adjustment: As already mentioned, KALLAX hinges have two to three adjustment screws – one for horizontal corrections (left/right), one for vertical height adjustment, and on some models one for depth positioning. It is helpful to first adjust the height, then the horizontal alignment, and finally the depth to ensure the door moves smoothly within the frame.

3. Warped shelving parts: If the shelf is not built completely level or stands on an uneven floor, this can affect the opposite doors and cause them to stick.

4. Material swelling: Especially with particleboard fronts, size changes can occur in humid environments, which affect smooth door movement.

Practical tip:
- Loosen all hinge screws completely, then position the door correctly and only then tighten the screws slightly.
- Gradually tighten the screws while repeatedly checking the alignment.

If you like, I can write you a brief step-by-step guide on how to adjust the hinges as precisely as possible. Often the problem is not the material but that the hinges are not aligned parallel or are tightened too much.

This is a crucial point. Additionally, I would like to emphasize that during adjustment, the hinges should not only support the weight of the door but also allow some freedom of movement. Otherwise, stresses can develop in the material that cause the door to stick when closing.

It is also advisable to check before installing the doors whether the side panels of the shelving unit are perfectly square. Especially when combining multiple KALLAX units, small deviations can lead to problems.

Regarding moisture: If the doors are made of MDF or particleboard, they can swell slightly over time if the room’s humidity changes significantly. To prevent this, it often helps to monitor the humidity briefly or ventilate the room periodically to maintain a stable indoor climate.

In summary, I see the main causes of sticking doors as misalignment, shelving positioning, and indoor climate.
