Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my KALLAX shelves from IKEA. The doors keep swinging open on their own, even though I close them gently and make sure nothing is blocking them. It’s not only annoying but also potentially dangerous, as the doors can slam shut loudly. I have already tried various adjustments, but the issue persists.

For your information: these are the doors with magnetic catches, and the unit is placed on a smooth laminate floor in a normal room temperature environment (around 21°C (70°F)).

Could this be caused by misaligned doors, or is it possible to adjust the hinges somehow? Does anyone know tricks to solve this problem permanently without having to rebuild the entire frame or replace the doors? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hello marru,

I’m very familiar with this issue because I also have KALLAX doors that sometimes open by themselves. Often, this happens because the doors or the frame aren’t installed completely level, causing gravity to slowly push the door open.

Here are a few things you can check:

1. Make sure the hinges are properly screwed in. Sometimes they loosen slightly due to tension.
2. Check that the door hangs straight. If not, you can usually adjust the hinges slightly – most KALLAX hinge units have adjustment screws for height and depth.
3. The magnetic catches should be strong enough to hold the door. If the magnet doesn’t hold well, replacing or reinforcing it can help. Some users attach an additional small magnetic strip or felt to the contact area to improve adhesion.
4. Lastly, if the shelving unit stands on a smooth floor, it might shift slightly, which can cause the doors to move or open. Placing the unit on small rubber feet or anti-slip mats may help.

If you want, you can describe exactly what kind of magnetic catch you have and how the doors hang. Then I can give you more detailed advice!

I agree with that. Often, the original magnets on KALLAX units are not as strong as desired. Here are my suggestions:

- First, use a small Allen key to check if the hinges are adjustable. On KALLAX, you can usually adjust the hinges in three directions: height, depth, and sideways. This is especially helpful for slightly misaligned doors.
- If that’s not enough, I recommend replacing the magnetic catches. IKEA sells replacement magnets separately, or you can use other sturdy clamp magnets that are compatible.
- Another option is to apply self-adhesive foam strips on the door frame. They provide gentle counterpressure and cushion the door closing.

This way, the door stays closed and the problem of it swinging open is resolved. You can also check whether the door has become too heavy due to installed items, which could reduce the spring action of the hinges.

I’m adding to the previous tips with a simple step-by-step guide for adjusting the KALLAX doors:

1. Open the door and examine the hinge closely.
2. The hinge usually has a screw for height adjustment, one for depth (distance from the shelf), and a screw for lateral adjustment.
3. To prevent the door from opening by itself, adjust the depth so that the door is slightly pressed toward the frame when closed.
4. Check the magnetic catch to ensure it is firmly seated and properly aligned. If the magnet is weak, replacing it may help. Some have been replaced with stronger neodymium magnets, which offer better hold.
5. If the doors still open unintentionally, you can attach a felt or foam rubber strip on the inside edge of the door near the latch. This acts as cushioning and prevents the door from slamming shut.

Tip: Avoid overly tight adjustments—the door should still open easily. Otherwise, everyday usability will suffer.

Conclusion: Precise hinge adjustments combined with good magnets usually solve the problem.

That could indeed be the case, as I have it standing directly on laminate flooring. I have now placed two small rubber pads from the hardware store underneath, and I can already see that the movement has decreased, but it is not completely eliminated.

I will probably try that next if adjusting the hinges with the three screws is not enough. After reading your tips, I carefully adjusted the hinges a little, and now the door hangs better, but unfortunately it still doesn’t stay closed.

I have one more question: How can I tell if the magnets are weak? I can’t really judge by feel whether they hold or not. Is there a kind of “standard test” for this? I don’t want to buy new ones if it’s not necessary.

Thanks so much in advance for all the helpful advice! 🙂
