ᐅ KALLAX and Extreme Heat – Experiences with Fading?

Hello everyone, I recently have a KALLAX shelf from IKEA in my living room, and since there have been some extreme heatwaves here in Germany over the past weeks, I’m wondering how resistant the surface of this shelf really is to UV radiation and prolonged heat exposure. Specifically, I’m concerned about possible fading or discoloration of the white and colored surfaces after extended sunlight exposure, which can occur in summer, for example, through large windows. Has anyone experienced whether the material fades quickly, how severe the changes might be, and if there is any way to prevent or treat this? I would appreciate your feedback and experiences!

It’s interesting that the everyday stress factors are examined so thoroughly here.

I’ve been considering whether I could use special furniture care products that protect against UV or at least make the material less vulnerable – if anyone has experience with this, that would be great.

I would be rather skeptical about that. Melamine resin surfaces are already very durable, but to my knowledge, there aren’t any care products that can block UV radiation. At most, covering with UV-blocking films or protective coatings might help – but for indoor furniture, such measures are uncommon and often untested.

Therefore, it is generally more advisable to use mechanical and structural protection methods.

Regarding seasonal rotation: that could indeed extend wear protection times since fading would be distributed more evenly. However, I understand the effort involved depending on the size and weight. It could also be done twice a year if feasible.

I would also be interested to know if the shelf is generally placed in areas that cool down at night, since temperature fluctuations can also affect the behavior of the material.

Hello everyone,

I find the discussion here very helpful, as I have similar concerns. I am particularly interested in how to proactively deal with this issue without constantly moving the furniture or taking extensive measures.

It is reassuring to hear that dramatic fading does not occur within just a few weeks, but it can still feel a bit helpless when a piece of furniture is visually affected so strongly.

Maybe temporary covers or lightweight fabric covers could be considered? Something like a light cotton or similar material for protection – the question is whether that really makes a difference when heat and UV radiation are affecting it from the outside.

Has anyone tried something like this? I am also curious about how quickly visible damage might recover after removing such a cover (which I can hardly imagine).

P.S. Of course, I also want to avoid my beloved shelf becoming a ‘sun victim,’ especially since it is so versatile and beautiful.
