Hello everyone,
I am planning to use IKEA Platsa furniture on my balcony, which is partly covered but not fully protected from the weather. Since the Platsa series is mainly designed for indoor use, I would like to know the best ways to protect this furniture for outdoor conditions, in order to prevent damage from moisture, UV exposure, or temperature fluctuations. Are there specific paints, sealants, or other protective measures you would recommend to extend the furniture’s lifespan? I look forward to your tips, experiences, or warnings if this idea might not be advisable in general.

I see the practical aspect: the furniture is affordable and I like the design. That’s why I’m asking about protective measures. Still, it sounds like a considerable effort is required.
Could you briefly explain how to do this properly without completely ruining the appearance? And which product would you recommend? Also: How often would this kind of sealing need to be renewed? Are there any experiences regarding how long the furniture could stay protected this way?

Regarding the question about silicone: There are clear, flexible sanitary silicones that are waterproof. These can be applied very thinly to furniture corners using a cartridge gun, and once cured, they are hardly visible if applied carefully and cleanly.
Concerning durability: In harsh weather conditions, the condition should be checked at least once a year, and any cracks or flaking should be repaired immediately. An outdoor sealant usually lasts 1-3 years, depending on exposure and UV radiation.
However, be careful: Melamine foil itself is very sensitive; even the best impregnation won’t help if water penetrates the material.

Marcellela27 Apr 2024 09:53I had Platsa outside on the balcony and additionally coated all edges with clear varnish and applied a UV-resistant sealant. After one year, slight swelling was visible at the corners. So, it’s better to be cautious. The material quality is not suitable for permanent outdoor use.
