Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA Besta shelving unit that I would like to secure against tipping over. Is there a simple way to do this without much effort or special tools? It is important to me that the safety solution is as discreet as possible and not too noticeable, since the unit is in the living room. I have heard about specific wall anchors, but I am unsure if they are truly effective or if there are better options. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which methods have proven reliable in everyday use? I am especially interested in whether the standard mounting kits from IKEA for Besta are sufficient or if it is better to use other products. Thank you in advance for your help!

You should definitely secure the Besta shelf using the supplied wall anchors. These are designed to prevent tipping. Simply install the plugs and screws into the wall and attach the shelf to them. Other methods are usually unnecessary.

That might be true, but I wouldn’t take it for granted. The included fasteners are often designed for standard drywall. However, if you have a concrete ceiling or another type of material, they might not be the best fit.

You should also consider the load and height of the shelf. A tall, heavily loaded shelf requires stronger anchors, possibly additional brackets or dedicated supports. Wall anchoring alone must be of high quality; otherwise, the risk of tipping is not entirely eliminated.

Tip: Make sure to check your wall type, the shelf’s load, and whether the IKEA components are suitable. It might be worth investing in special heavy-duty anchors or metal brackets as supplements.

I can only agree with that. I’d like to explain the basics: A shelving unit like Besta usually tips over when the front is loaded or small children pull on it.

- IKEA wall fixings are generally designed for standard drywall and medium loads.
- For concrete or brick walls, you should use appropriate heavy-duty anchors.
- If you don’t want to drill holes, there are also anti-tip straps with Velcro that can be stuck to both furniture and wall, but these are less load-resistant.

The safest method is always to secure the shelf to the wall with at least two anchoring points. This effectively prevents tipping.

For a simple and quick securing method without special tools, I recommend the original IKEA anti-tip devices included in the Besta set. These usually consist of a metal strap or plastic brackets that you can install using a regular cordless drill and a drill bit suitable for the appropriate wall anchors.

Additional tips:
- Make sure to use suitable anchors for your wall type (drywall, concrete, etc.)
- Place the brackets near the top of the shelving unit
- Avoid adhesive or Velcro solutions as the primary fastening method, as they are generally less secure

This straightforward solution generally meets safety requirements for a typical household and is visually unobtrusive.
