Hello everyone, I am currently considering the idea of making my Ikea Besta shelving unit more flexible, as I want to rearrange the space more often. My specific question is: Is there a way to equip the Ikea Besta system with casters so that it can be easily and safely moved between different rooms without compromising stability or design? I have already thought about attaching casters to the bottom, but I am unsure which type of casters would be best, how this would affect the shelving unit, and whether any other modifications might be necessary to make it practical. Perhaps someone here has experience or tips on how to make Besta mobile – ideally also with regard to different floor coverings (carpet, hardwood). Thank you very much!

Hello, yes, that is possible. Simply buy furniture casters, which you should ideally attach to the Besta unit using a board underneath to ensure the casters hold securely. Make sure to choose casters with brakes and soft material if you have parquet flooring. This way, you can make the shelving unit mobile without damaging it.

This is generally good advice, but it should be considered that the Besta shelf is not designed to remain permanently on casters. An often underestimated risk is the reduced lateral stability, which can lead to tipping or damage when moving the unit.

Furthermore, it is worth considering whether the mounting board needs to serve a specific purpose, such as better distributing weight or reducing mechanical stress. The load capacity of the casters is also crucial, especially when the shelf is fully loaded. If mobility is a priority, it might be advisable to complement the setup with floor anchors or side stabilizers.

Hello, I can add to the previous suggestions and explain more precisely how you can equip Ikea Besta units with casters without losing stability. Basically, casters are suitable if you mount them under a sturdy wooden or metal plate on which the Besta stands. This way, you distribute the load better and prevent individual casters from bearing too much weight.

Important:
- Choose casters with rubber or polyurethane wheels, especially for parquet or laminate flooring, to avoid scratches.
- Make sure the casters have brakes so the unit doesn’t roll away when you want to park it.
- Since Ikea Besta has pre-installed feet, you can remove or cover them before attaching the plate.
- To improve lateral stability, small corner braces on the inside can help, especially if the unit is large or tall.

If you have a lot of weight in the cabinets, the casters should have a load capacity of at least about 20 kg (44 lbs) each. If you store many heavy items, consider whether heavier-duty casters are needed.

So: Yes, it is possible! If you want, I can also write a short guide on how I did it.
