Good morning everyone, over the past few days I have been trying to completely disassemble my Ikea Pax wardrobe in order to move it. Now I have the question: Is there a way to take apart the Ikea Pax wardrobe without leaving any damage, such as screw holes being affected, dowels breaking, or the material being compromised? I want to avoid any issues during reassembly or potential resale later on – does anyone know a reliable and proven method to disassemble the wardrobe so that it can be restored to its original condition without visible marks?

Hello arend37, in my experience, flat dowels usually remain firmly in place after decades. Most of the time, you cannot remove them without causing some damage to the wood. Therefore, my recommendation is: carefully loosen screws and brackets, gently pull all parts apart, but generally leave the dowels in the wood. If you want to remove them completely, there is a risk of chipping. That’s why when moving, I usually left the flat dowels in and simply reassembled the furniture. However, if you insist on removing them, I would use a sharp knife to cut through the dowel joints, effectively peeling the wood away around them.

In short: Loose tenons usually stay in place. Fully unscrew the screws, then carefully pull the parts apart, pushing any gaps out with a soft plastic wedge or your fingertips. Complete removal without any residue is hardly possible.

I would like to add that it’s not just about cleaning after disassembly, but also the risk that the cabinet’s stability can be compromised if flat dowels are replaced or levered out multiple times. While reassembly usually works, the fit noticeably deteriorates when the dowels are damaged. Therefore, I recommend the following approach: - Completely unscrew the screws - Gently tap the joints with a rubber mallet - Leave the flat dowels in place if possible - Smooth the wood surfaces with fine sandpaper to remove minor abrasion marks
This isn’t a completely residue-free disassembly, but it is a reasonable balance between preservation and functionality.

That sums it up quite well. I even wonder if Ikea intended that at all. The furniture is rather inexpensive and designed more for semi-permanent assembly – so you can’t expect ultra-high-quality reusability. My advice: If you care a lot about residue-free disassembly, you should focus on solid furniture or pieces connected in a completely different way. Pax is made rather cheaply and gets somewhat damaged during assembly.

I feel the same way, but I also find it a bit unfortunate that Ikea furniture is often not designed for multiple assemblies – especially Pax, as such a large wardrobe. On the other hand, by carefully disassembling and keeping all the screws plus doing some minor repairs with wood filler, I managed quite well. If you’re handy, it’s definitely doable; you just need to be realistic and expect some minor signs of use. Ultimately, the most important thing is to work as precisely as possible during the initial assembly to make disassembling easier and cleaner.
