ᐅ Is it possible to cover Ikea Besta units with acrylic films?

Good morning everyone,

I am considering refinishing my IKEA Besta furniture with acrylic films to improve its appearance and make the surface more durable. My question is whether anyone has experience with effectively applying acrylic films to the Besta cabinet surface (that is, the plastic coating on the wood panels) without bubbles forming or the film peeling off after a short time.

I am especially interested in advice on suitable preparation steps, adhesive compatibility, or alternative methods (e.g., primers), and whether the material adapts well to corners and edges.

I would appreciate any tips, especially long-term experiences!

I would like to add that surface preparation is crucial. Even if the surface is smooth, lightly roughening it with a sanding pad, such as an edge sanding pad or Scotch-Brite, can improve adhesion without damaging the surface too much.

Additionally, warming the film (e.g., with a heat gun) helps it conform better to corners and prevents bubbles from forming.

Exactly, that's crucial. A heat gun is very helpful, especially around corners. Be careful not to overheat the foil, otherwise it will warp.

In summary:

- IKEA Besta surfaces are coated with melamine resin, which can cause adhesion issues.
- A thorough, grease-free cleaning with isopropanol is essential.
- Very light sanding improves adhesive strength but should be done carefully.
- Choosing a high-quality, self-adhesive acrylic film is crucial.
- Applying heat (hot air gun) helps with fitting edges and prevents blistering.

Testing on an inconspicuous area is indispensable for lasting success.

I am wondering if, besides simple vinyl wrapping, applying a plastic coating might also be an option—especially when it comes to long-lasting durability. Vinyl wraps are sensitive to scratches and sometimes peel off at the edges.

I can only agree with that, but how long does it really last? Even a minor mistake during the preparation can make the entire surface unusable.

Thanks for the suggestion. Painting is less feasible for my project in terms of time and cost. Vinyl wrapping seems more practical and reversible to me.

I’m particularly interested if anyone has hands-on experience with acrylic films on Besta, how long the films adhere, and how durable they are with frequent use (assembly and disassembly, cleaning).

There are definitely long-term experiences available; I personally applied a laminate to a Besta shelf two years ago and have had no issues so far. I followed these points:

- Do not allow any moisture during application
- Only light mechanical stress within the first 48 hours
- Avoid strong direct sunlight immediately after installation

The laminate has not peeled off up to now, although I do not use any harsh cleaning agents.
